The United States' missile strikes on a military airfield in Syria violates international law and represents an act of aggression against a sovereign state under a far-fetched pretext, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The US launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Syrian military airfield in Ash Sha'irat near Homs late Thursday. US President Donald Trump said the attack was a response to the alleged chemical weapon use in Idlib on Tuesday, which Washington blames on Damascus.

"President [Vladimir] Putin regards the US attacks on Syria as an aggression against a sovereign state in violation of the norms of international law, and under a trumped-up pretext at that," Pesov told reporters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also sees the latest US missile strikes on a military airfield in Syria as an attempt to distract from the mounting civilian casualties in Iraq, the Kremlin added.

"Putin also sees the attacks on Syria by the US as an attempt to divert the international community's attention from the numerous casualties among civilians in Iraq."

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) had confirmed that Syrian armed forces do not possess chemical weapons, the Kremlin cited Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying Friday while warning of the danger of ignoring terrorist use of chemical weapons.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a statement after the US attack that there were no discussions or prior contacts between the United States and Moscow ahead of the missile strike on the Syrian base.

"The fact of the destruction of all chemical weapons stockpiles has been recorded and confirmed by the OPCW, a specialized UN unit," Peskov told reporters.

"At the same time, in Putin's opinion, total disregard for the use of chemical weapons by terrorists only drastically aggravates the situation," Peskov said.

US missiles blast Syria; Trump demands 'end the slaughter'

PALM BEACH, Fla. (April 6, 2017) — The United States blasted a Syrian air base with a barrage of cruise missiles Thursday night in fiery retaliation for this week's gruesome chemical weapons attack against civilians. President Donald Trump cast the U.S. assault as vital to deter future use of poison gas and called on other nations to join in seeking "to end the slaughter and bloodshed in Syria."

It was the first direct American assault on the Syrian government and Trump's most dramatic military order since becoming president just over two months ago. The strikes also risk thrusting the U.S. deeper into an intractable conflict that his predecessor spent years trying to avoid.

Announcing the assault from his Florida resort, Trump said there was no doubt Syrian President Bashar Assad was responsible for the chemical attack, which he said employed banned gases and killed dozens.

"Assad choked out the lives of helpless men, women and children," Trump declared.

Kremlin Softens on Assad After Trump, Haley Get Tough

A day after President Trump and U.N. Ambassador Haley signaled a willingness to take action in Syria, Moscow softened its support for the Assad regime.

A day after President Trump said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s chemical attack on his own people went “beyond a red line,” the Kremlin told the Associated Press that Russia’s support for Assad was “not unconditional.”

At a press conference with Jordanian King Abdullah II Wednesday, Trump said that the attack crossed “many, many lines.” Trump lamented the innocent civilians killed by the attack and indicated a change in his attitude toward the situation in Syria.

Meanwhile, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley warned the U.N. Security Council Wednesday that the United States may take unilateral action against the Assad regime. Haley held up photographs of the victims of the attack.

She also slammed Russia for its protection of the Assad regime, while criticizing the U.N. for its collective inaction.

Dmitry Peskov, President Putin’s spokesman, said Thursday that the Kremlin’s support for the Assad regime was “not unconditional,” a marked departure from their previous position.

Moscow had supported Assad since the beginning of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, even after the Syrian government had used chemical weapons against its own people.

Russia committed military forces to the fight in 2015.

Clear and Concise Pentagon Statement on U.S. Missile Strike Against Shayrat Airfield in Syria…
Posted on April 7, 2017 by sundance

The Pentagon clearly outlines the reason for President Trump’s strategic and selected military response.  The U.S. is stating evidence that Bashir Assad did launch chemical weapons from this exact airbase, and Russia was willfully blind in their complicity.

We are assessing the results of the strike.  Initial indications are that this strike has severely damaged or destroyed Syrian aircraft and support infrastructure and equipment at Shayrat Airfield, reducing the Syrian Government’s ability to deliver chemical weapons.  The use of chemical weapons against innocent people will not be tolerated.

Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi endorse Trump's attack in Syria

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi broke with fellow Democrats who had criticized President Trump's military action against Syria to endorse the move late Thursday.

"Making sure Assad knows that when he commits such despicable atrocities he will pay a price is the right thing to do," Schumer said in a statement released late Thursday. "I salute the professionalism and skill of our Armed Forces who took action today."

"Tonight's strike in Syria appears to be a proportional response to the the regime's use of chemical weapons," Pelosi said in a statement.

Following the missile launch at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, some Democratic lawmakers criticized Trump for not asking Congress' permission before choosing to launch 59 Tomahawk missiles at an airbase in west Syria where it's believed Tuesday's chemical weapon attack originated.

Schumer did warn, however, that the Trump administration must "come up with a strategy and consult with Congress before implementing it."

Pelosi echoed those concerns, calling on the White House to ask Congress for an Authorization for Use of Military Force if it plans further action against the regime of Bashar Assad in order to "prevent another open-ended war in the Middle East."

Europe rallies behind US over Syria air strikes

Taavi Rõivas, a former Estonian prime minister and current vice president of the Estonian parliament, also backed the U.S., slamming as “ridiculous” attempts by Russia to “shift attention” away from the subject.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the Syrian regime “bears the full responsibility” for the strike, and the use of chemical weapons “cannot go unanswered.”

Tomas Valasek, who last week left his role as Slovakia’s ambassador to NATO, expressed welcome surprise at the Trump administration’s decision.

The Israeli government and Hashim Thaçi, president of Kosovo, offered strong condemnation of the Assad regime and support for the strikes. Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmu_ said he hoped the strikes helped “ensure peace.” A spokesperson for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan called it a “positive response,” and Turkey called for a no-fly zone to be imposed over Syria.

In both word and action, @POTUS sent a strong and clear message today that the use and spread of chemical weapons will not be tolerated.

I fully support @realDonaldTrump's action against Assad's murderous regime. He has to face justice and people or #Syria must be liberated.
