Steve Bannon removed from National Security Council
« on: April 05, 2017, 01:18:14 PM »
White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has been removed from the National Security Council in a staff shake-up, according to a federal filing.

According to a National Security Presidential Memorandum in the Federal Register, Bannon is off the council and Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert has been demoted.

National security adviser H.R. McMaster is now in charge of setting the agenda for meetings of the council and can delegate that responsibility to Bossert, if he so chooses.

Bossert took a trip to Iraq this week with Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law and one of his top advisers.

Why did Trump remove Steve Bannon from the National Security Council? Update: At odds with Kushner?

Update: One more possibility:

    — Oliver Darcy (@oliverdarcy) April 5, 2017

Update: If this is true, Bannon leaving the NSC begins to feel more like a true demotion:

In recent weeks, Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, has asked searching questions – sometimes for hours – of inside and outside advisers about the White House’s performance and complained about Bannon in particular, according to people who have spoken with Kushner. Kushner, a onetime New York Democrat, and Bannon, a hard-right nationalist, have clashed as Kushner has told people that Bannon’s desire to deconstruct the government, is hurting the president.

One person familiar with Kushner’s thinking says Kushner believes Bannon is more of a problem than Reince Priebus, the chief of staff.

“Big fight is between nationalists and the ‘West Wing Democrats,” one senior administration official said.

President Trump Removes Top Strategist Steve Bannon from National Security Council

Bannon, the former executive chairman of Breitbart News, is one of Trump’s most trusted and controversial advisers. He has channeled the populist and nationalist sentiment that propelled Trump’s presidential campaign, and his placement on the NSC committee drew criticism from some members of Congress and Washington’s foreign policy establishment who said it risked politicizing the security advice provided to the president.

A White House official portrayed the change as a natural progression rather than a demotion for Bannon. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, contended that Bannon was placed on the committee in part to monitor Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and never attended a meeting. He’s no longer needed with McMaster in charge of the council, the official said.

Rick Perry Added to National Security Council

Secretary of Energy and former Texas governor Rick Perry was added to the National Security Council on Wednesday.

Perry's addition comes as White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon was removed, the Associated Press reports.  Bannon's presence on the committee was met with opposition, although one White House official said he was never present at a meeting.

The secretary of energy is already considered a statutory attendee of the National Security Council, as the Department of Energy deals with matters related to national security, including nuclear weapons and nuclear proliferation.

Perry was confirmed by the Senate on March 2 to his current secretary position.

Bannon still remains in the White House as chief strategist even though he is no longer on the National Security Council.

PENCE SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT: Bannon’s Removal From NSC Is Not A Demotion

In the normal course of events in any administration, there are position shifts and changes. Steve Bannon’s removal from the National Security Council is not a demotion, as the left is trying to insinuate.

Independent Journal Review lays out the facts:

Pence argued that the move was not a demotion for Bannon who serves as the Chief Strategist for President Donald Trump.

“With H.R. McMaster as our National Security Advisor, and the president’s action adding the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, adding the Director of National Intelligence, and moving some of our senior personnel off the National Security Council just simply represents a very simple routine evolution of the national security team around the president,” Pence said.

When McCallum pressed him, asking specifically if the removal of Bannon was a demotion, the Vice President said, “Not for Steve [Bannon].”

And FOX added Pence’s comments that Steve Banana is a very valued member of the administration:

He said Bannon is a “highly valued member” of the administration and this is not a demotion.

“I think with H.R. McMaster’s addition as our National Security Advisor – a man of extraordinary background in the military – this is just a natural evolution to ensure the National Security Council is organized in a way that best serves the president in resolving and making those difficult decisions,” Pence said.

Other than being the son-in-law of the POTUS, and approaching becoming a billionaire himself, can someone please explain just WTF credentials Jared Kushner suddenly has being in a position to steer the course of the entire country?

==================================

Megadonor urged Bannon not to resign

Trump’s strategist threatened to leave the White House after clashing with Jared Kushner.

The man credited with honing Donald Trump’s populist message and guiding him into the White House has grown frustrated amid continued infighting in the West Wing, so much so that in recent weeks a top donor had to persuade him to stay in his position.

Five people, including a senior administration official and several sources close to the president, tell POLITICO that Steve Bannon, one of Trump’s closest advisers, has clashed with the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who’s taken on an increasingly prominent portfolio in the West Wing. Bannon has complained that Kushner and his allies are trying to undermine his populist approach, the sources said.

Republican megadonor Rebekah Mercer, a longtime Bannon confidante who became a prominent Trump supporter during the campaign, urged Bannon not to resign. “Rebekah Mercer prevailed upon him to stay,” said one person familiar with the situation.

Steve Bannon Attends National Security Council Meeting Just One Day After Being ‘Removed’

 4/6/17

Yesterday it was reported that White House Chief Strategist, Steve Bannon was removed from the National Security Council. Today, he attended an NSC meeting despite being ‘removed’.

The Washington Examiner reports:

White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has attended the first meeting of the National Security Council after he was removed from the principals committee Wednesday.

CNBC reported Bannon can attend meetings of the principals committee if he was invited by President Trump or national security adviser H.R. McMaster. A White House official reported Bannon rarely attended meetings when he was a member of the principals committee.

But, he apparently decided to attend on Wednesday for a meeting on an unspecified topic.

“He is one of the president’s closest and most trusted advisers,” a White House source told CNBC when asked why Bannon attended.

Bannon’s appointment to the National Security Council was seen as controversial in the early days of the Trump administration, given the stories about Muslims and foreign countries published during his time in charge of Breitbart.
