Government Shutdown Now Looms for Republicans
« on: March 27, 2017, 11:24:22 AM »
With their failure to pass new healthcare legislation barely in the rear-view mirror, Republicans are now staring down another potential blunder — government shutdown.

House Republicans are wounded and scattered after failing to even get a vote on the American Health Care Act, and Democrats have panned President Trump's proposed budget and could block a funding plan in the Senate.

"The White House and Republicans on the Hill cannot/won't risk a shutdown. Given the last week — it's out of the question," a senior GOP aide told Axios.

But the math isn't adding up for Republicans, despite controlling Congress and the White House while the House is seemingly embroiled in a civil war.

"We underestimated the vitriol in the Republican conference. The animosity between the hardline House Freedom Caucus and leadership is such that it's hard to see how the coalition comes together. Each time there was an accommodation, there was a new demand," a White House official said.

Further complicating matters — the House is in session just 12 more days between now and then, Politico reported.
