Rachel wasn't played. All those viewers who turned in to hear about tax returns FIRST had to hear -- many for the first time ever -- Rachel connect dozens of dots about his Russian connections, and possible bribes, and a Florida property that was mysteriously sold to a Russian crime figure for far more than he paid for it a few years earlier (yielding DT a $60 million profit at a time when the Florida market was down and he was getting pressured to pay $38 million he owed to the Deutsche bank.)
And they got to hear Rachel state how important it was to see his full tax returns, and how the 2008 return could contain very interesting information, and how she suspected more returns might be forthcoming.
And she also acknowledged that this one could have come from DT -- and pointed out that the only reason he paid a significant amount of taxes was because of the alternative minimum tax -- which he wants to end.

It's really teh OTHER tax return that shows all the crime! REALLY!!!

Rachel Maddow's epic buildup to ... 2 pages from Trump's 2005 tax returns
http://money.cnn.com/2017/03/14/media/rachel-maddow-donald-trump-2005-taxes/The decision to hype the scoop -- Maddow first tweeted her all-caps "BREAKING" alert at 7:36 p.m. ET -- disappointed many journalists, who felt that Maddow had undermined legitimate inquiry into Trump's tax returns.
It also disappointed Democrats, including Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign press secretary Brian Fallon.
Before Maddow's broadcast, Fallon retweeted the breaking news alert and called it "the holy grail." After Maddow showed her hand, Fallon wrote: "Dems should return focus to Trumpcare tomorrow & the millions it will leave uninsured, not get distracted by two pages from '05 tax return."

4. And, she's wiping the floor with Fox News.
Finally, Maddow's handling of the tax returns gave the Trump White House and pro-Trump conservatives like Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham an opening to mock NBC and the media for "hysterical" reporting. And they did so for nearly on hour on Hannity's program on Fox News.
Even CNBC took a dig at its sister network, with a headline that read: "Donald Trump just got a nice victory, thanks, of all people, to Rachel Maddow."
