Salinas is suing President Trump

Via KSBW:

The Salinas City Council voted 6-0 Tuesday in favor of filing a federal lawsuit against President Donald Trump and the executive branch to prevent implementations of an executive order against sanctuary cities.

Trump’s executive order threatens to cut federal funding from cities who declare themselves as sanctuaries for illegal immigrants.

Salinas is not a sanctuary city.

With a large immigrant population, city leaders have been under pressure to change that since Trump was elected as President. But even just two weeks ago, the City Council rejected a resolution to designate Salinas as a sanctuary city. Councilmembers Kimbley Craig, Steve McShane, John “Tony” Villegas, and Mayor Joe Gunter struck the resolution down.

At a press conference Tuesday, City Attorney Chris Callihan explained the reason for Salinas’ lawsuit. slated to be filed later this month.

“Any attempt by the federal government to withhold federal funding from Salinas, should it become a sanctuary city, would be an unconstitutional act,” Callihan said.
