Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia is under fire Thursday for his Wednesday evening vote to confirm Jeff Sessions as U.S. attorney general.

According to Guardian political reporter Ben Jacobs, Manchin “flash[ed Sessions] a thumbs up on his way in the chamber,” before breaking with his party to cast the only Democratic vote in favor of Sessions’ confirmation.

'Traitor': West Virginia Democrat Manchin Under Fire for Pro-Sessions Vote

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) is up for re-election in 2018.

I have posted this before and it bears repeating.

Manchin used his superduper dem primary vote for obumbles in 2008 in a state that went for hillary that year by almost 3 to 1.  Now Manchin is scared shitless he is going to get tossed out on his ass in 2018. Get the right GOP candidate that reminds all of the ex dem unemployed coal miners of what he did and he will have very little chance. That assumes the current governor, an extremely wealthy dem by the name of Jim Justice, does not run against him in the primary. Oh and did I mention that Jim Justice owns the Greenbrier Hotel and lots of idled coal mines? Thanks to obama, Justice had to lay off all kinds of coal miners and he told them the exact reason why he had to do it.  Did I forget to mention that he is also very good friends with Trump?

Manchin is fighting for his political life in a state that is increasingly unforgiving of dems who march in lockstep with the national party.

This reminds me of something my Mom laughs about to this day.  I was 14, and I had asked to do something earlier in the day, and she told me no.  I don't even remember what it was now, but as I tried to plead my case, she told me I was "Only 14yrs old".  Later that night, I got in trouble for something and while getting a bit of a tongue lashing she told me I was "almost 15yrs old".  I immediately called her on the discrepancy how when I wanted something, I was "only 14yrs old", yet when I was in trouble, I was "almost 15yrs old".. she told me to drop it or go to my room.  I decided to go to my room, as I went there, I could hear her standing in the kitchen trying not to laugh under her breath, as she realized I'd caught her on that one.

At least out here in flyover country, when both women were senatresses representing your state, because she was more loud-mouthed and offensive, Babs got most of the publicity, everybody forgetting who the other senatress was.

Babs Bouncer started in CA's legislature, IIRC, moved up to the US House (she was one of the House Bank check bouncers, hence my nickname) and then the the Senate. She's a brainless, often dishonest, idiot. Don't look for better from her successor, Kamala Harris.

DiFei became Mayor of SF when Mayor Moscone was assassinated (along with Harvey Milk). She moved up to the Senate from there. Probably her most notable "accomplishment" was refusing to shut down SF bathhouses when those were identified as hosts for the casual-promiscuous gay sex that transmitted AIDS. She probably has the lives of scores or hundreds of gay men on her head. Occasionally I say that between them, DiFei and Babs have an occasionally used half a brain; it resides in DiFei's head, and I've not heard that she's ever loaned it to Babs.

I don't know the ins and outs of WV politics, unsurprisingly. But if Sen. Manchin didn't believe his vote to confirm AG Sessions would result in his being "primaried", he's not smart enough to be where he is. He knows that will happen. The question, IMO, is whether he will try to stick it through as a D, flip in the next year or so to R, or retire.

Running as a D would cost him a lot of $$ in the primary, and he would not receive much support from the national level D party and its big-$$ contributors if he won. Flipping to R is also risky, as the WV D Party people would be highly motivated to defeat him, and his welcome by WV and many national level Rs would be uncertain.

That's how it looks from this side of the continent.
