MERCED, Calif. — Jeff Marchini and others in the Central Valley here bet their farms on the election of Donald J. Trump. His message of reducing regulations and taxes appealed to this Republican stronghold, one of Mr. Trump’s strongest bases of support in the state.

As for his promises about cracking down on illegal immigrants, many assumed Mr. Trump’s pledges were mostly just talk. But two weeks into his administration, Mr. Trump has signed executive orders that have upended the country’s immigration laws. Now farmers here are deeply alarmed about what the new policies could mean for their workers, most of whom are unauthorized, and the businesses that depend on them.

“Everything’s coming so quickly,” Mr. Marchini said. “We’re not loading people into buses or deporting them, that’s not happening yet.” As he looked out over a crew of workers bent over as they rifled through muddy leaves to find purple heads of radicchio, he said that as a businessman, Mr. Trump would know that farmers had invested millions of dollars into produce that is growing right now, and that not being able to pick and sell those crops would represent huge losses for the state economy. “I’m confident that he can grasp the magnitude and the anxiety of what’s happening now.”

Mr. Marchini, the radicchio farmer, said he felt similarly after seeing generations of workers on his family farm send their children to college and join the middle class. Mr. Marchini’s family has farmed in the valley for four generations and he grew up working side by side with Mexican immigrants. He said that no feasible increase in wages or change in conditions would be enough to draw native-born Americans back into the fields. It was the other conservatives, he said, who were out of touch about how to deal with foreign workers. “If you find a way to get in here, there’s a need for what you do.”

wtf is wrong with people . he assumed that frump was just going after "those" people well you gambled and lost . if losing your farm teaches you to never vote republicon again it will be worth it

So, what does it say about Marchini's business practices, that reducing illegal immigration and stepped up deportations of illegals would be a concern and have an impact on his business.

Speaking as a son of a farmer who hired LEGAL seasonal migrant workers and was himself the son of LEGAL immigrants, Mr. Marchini. I hope every illegal immigrant on your and your buddies' payrolls are ratted out and sent back to whatever country they came from!

Well, I'm sure that if the NYT contacted enough Central Valley farmers, they'd find somebody like that. Especially if the NYT only called farmers who sell at least some "organic" produce, as Marchini farms does. Or maybe Mr. Marchini is lying through his teeth about having voted for Trump. It's not like a few dozen or a few score fewer votes for Trump would have affected CA's outcome.

True. The driving factor behind Trump is he's no politician. People are tired of politicians. Promising this but delivering much of nothing. Trump is a hardball guy. He does what he says. I didn't doubt he'd deliver. I, too, don't understand why someone would think he wouldn't.

To be honest, I thought Trump's promises were just talk. He was still, to me at the time, far better than The SHREW. So seeing him work to keep his promises has been a very pleasant surprise to me.

AHHHH-nold was also a non-politician and made some good-sounding promises, but ended up being at least arguably CA's worst Governor in the past century or so (and maybe ever). I'm still POed that AHHHH-nold took away in the recall what would have been a win by Tom McClintock. I think McClintock would have been vastly better, because he knew where the Ds had buried all the budgetary bodies. AHHHH-nold was almost like putty in the Ds' hands in the few areas where he disagreed with the Ds.

OTOH, I'm sure California regs and taxes cost more than having to hire legal workers will do. 

But then again, I haven't heard Trump say anything about about the migrant farm workers, many of who do work in the US legally.

There was a headline (page 1) on the Dallas Morning News about "Restaurant Industry could be devastated by immigration crackdown" or some such nonsense.

Then in the article they explore how badly hurt various restaurants and similar hospitality industries will be hurt (unspoken) WHEN THEY STOP BREAKING THE LAW!!!!

An economy based on illegal actions is a false and underground economy.  This was a risk they took when they decided they would create an illegal business.

They might as well talk about how awful it would be if drugs were legalized OR harsher crackdowns on drugs were performed.

Well it wasn't identity theft in the sense that one thinks about when one hears identity theft. It was she gave her employer a SSN that belonged to a US citizen.

Having been through that shit with a friend of mine, dealing with the IRS, SSA, Medicare, VA and all the rest of the goverment shit, it is a complete pain in the ass. So as far as I am concerned it is damned identity theft!!!  SSA loves it cause they get more money... until someone is on SSA and their monthly check gets cancelled because some illegal is working using the same SSN.   That shit happened to a friend of mine's dad.  Took over a year to get it all straightened out. Meanwhile he was sucking hind tit.

That is when my give damn about these illegal invaders got up, left and went to Alpha Centari at warp speed. As far as I am concerned they should be shot on sight. Does that make me racist? If so, I don't care.

It's nice that the owner's sons - the guy the NYT interviewed - are coming into the business. Ignoring their politics, the sons got business and marketing degrees, from San Jose State and Chico State. Both are fine schools, for Agriculture CA's finest university is UC Davis. (FWIW, I have relatives who have gotten degrees at all three). Unless Papa gives them a hands-on "Masters degree", when he assumes soil temperature they may not have the Ag-smarts to manage the actual farming part of the family business.
