Elizabeth Edwards' statement on her husband's 2006 affair is read by Keith Olbermann on Countdown.

Elizabeth originally issued her statement on the blog, DailyKos, where it was recieved with a huge outpouring of support, just hours after John Edwards publicly admitted to the affair and apologized.

"Our family has been through a lot. Some caused by nature, some caused by human weakness, and some -- most recently -- caused by the desire for sensationalism and profit without any regard for the human consequences. None of these has been easy. But we have stood with one another through them all. Although John believes he should stand alone and take the consequences of his action now, when the door closes behind him, he has his family waiting for him.

John made a terrible mistake in 2006. The fact that it is a mistake that many others have made before him did not make it any easier for me to hear when he told me what he had done. But he did tell me. And we began a long and painful process in 2006, a process oddly made somewhat easier with my diagnosis in March of 2007. This was our private matter, and I frankly wanted it to be private because as painful as it was I did not want to have to play it out on a public stage as well. Because of a recent string of hurtful and absurd lies in a tabloid publication, because of a picture falsely suggesting that John was spending time with a child it wrongly alleged he had fathered outside our marriage, our private matter could no longer be wholly private.

The pain of the long journey since 2006 was about to be renewed.

John has spoken in a long on-camera interview I hope you watch. Admitting one's mistakes is a hard thing for anyone to do, and I am proud of the courage John showed by his honesty in the face of shame. The toll on our family of news helicopters over our house and reporters in our driveway is yet unknown. But now the truth is out, and the repair work that began in 2006 will continue. I ask that the public, who expressed concern about the harm John's conduct has done to us, think also about the real harm that the present voyeurism does and give me and my family the privacy we need at this time."

5. I have great admiration for Elizabeth Edwards and wish she and her family well.
I admit I'm confused about the facts surrounding this matter, but am grateful from a human perspective that Elizabeth Edwards has the ability to request privacy given JE is not the nominee, or the VP candidate at this time.

I shall respect her request and not comment on this matter again, personally.

Why, Elizabeth, was your rat-bastard husband at that hotel with his bimbo and offspring just two weeks ago?  Any expalination coming for that one?

Mrs. Edwards, your behavior has been almost as bad as that maggot you call your husband.  You are still covering his ass.  Why?

Well.  This would make any paternity test results even more interesting. "I did not have sexual relations with that woman".  Uh huh.

Blaming this on the media reporting it isn't going to work.  John brought it upon your family and you were a willing accomplice by standing by him when you knew he was living a lie.  The only one's I feel sorry for are your kids, they definately deserve better than either of you.  The two of you deserve whatever discomfort comes your way.

I do feel for Mrs. Edwards & the family and yes how they deal with it and resolve it is a private matter. However it is rather strange this "John screwed up but it's not his fault" explanation.

Looks like the whole family may resort to media whoring damage control to preserve the gravy train meal ticket lifestyle John boy has put at risk,

I hate to say it but it sounds as if she views the marriage as one of expediency and not of feelings.
Maybe I am wrong but to make a statement like that which attempts to cast Edwards as some sort of victim seems to me to be very curious.

The kids however may be the only ones to suffer.
I say may because it is very possible they will be raised in the same mindset that says political aspirations are a loftier goal then moral ones.

Whether it be extorting insurance companies or in personal matters their father is not an honorable or decent man.
Hopefully they are not indoctinated to follow in that tradition.

Their lifestyle don't come cheap. Some folks are willing to do most anything to achieve such a lifestyle,do even more so to keep it coming.

Exactly!  But they have spent a lot of effort today to emphasize how this affair happened in 2006 - hoping to blurrrrr the fact, which brought all this to a head - that Edwards was with his paid-off whore just A FEW WEEKS AGO....in a hotel room....with a baby....at 2 AM.

How is Olbermann spinning this? Is he pulling the DUmmy tactic of "So what? BUSH LIED, THOUSANDS DIED!" ?

He's got to get this into his self-righteous wheelhouse somehow.

i said the same thing in another thread: she not only covered his ass, she allowed him to start up the whole pony show again two years ago KNOWING he was a philandering liar.

she stood by him at press conferences talking about his own morals, about how much he loved her... she is a damn fine actress, I'll give her that.

Just ONCE I'd like to see the cheated spouse nodding quietly while the husband makes some contrite confession, immediately followed by the jilted one removing his wallet, and then taking out a pair of hedge clippers....

Ugh. Can you say deluded and into self preservation much?

I'm loathe to pick on a terminally ill woman. But I think it's abundantly clear given Elizabeth's statement, that she has lied to herself about what kind of man her husband really is. That's pathetic and sad to me.

I don't feel so bad about blasting her with both barrels because like lauri said above, she KNOWINGLY lied to the American public about his morals and fitness for POTUS. It would have been so easy for the Edwards' to come out and say that due to her cancer returning, they were withdrawing. It was the perfect out yet the once again KNOWINGLY kept up the fraud and perpetrated the lie that he was fit to lead our country. My sympathies just went totally out the window.

Can you imagine if he were a GOP nominee? They would tar and feather John and Elizabeth today and paint the entire party as corrupt and unfit to lead.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Their due is coming. When it comes out that Edwards is paying another man to claim a baby that he knows is his, and that Elizabeth knew about it, the Edwards will be over and done, politically. Around that point, when there is no more benefit to paying hush money, the mistress will sue for support, and will roto-rooter him plenty good.
