Ringling Bros. closing ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ after 146 years

Quote
Send home the clowns.

After 146 years, the curtain is coming down forever on “The Greatest Show on Earth.”

Its last performance will be May 21 at the Nassau Coliseum.

Not to mention a long and costly legal battle with animal rights advocates, which ended with its hugest stars — the elephants — being pink slipped. Elephants had been the symbol of the circus since an Asian pachyderm named Jumbo joined the show in 1882.

I do not watch circuses or care for them. Sad to see it gone.

Millions of kids will never get to see elephants or other wild animals in their natural habitat of steel bars and chains.

Growing up in Sarasota, FL, the Ringling Bros Circus was kind of a tradition for my family. We would go every year when they performed in Venice.
Sad to see it go, but honestly, it was past time. In the age of the internet and cheap entertainment on demand, circuses just can't compete.

For me, the sad part isn't the circus itself going away -- it's the music. Once played by a small collection of woodwind and brass players, it's now played by -- hell, something other than that.

Circus music is some of the most challenging, but fun to play stuff I've ever done.

And to play in a circus -- you had to have chops of steel.

I'll always love playing circus marches, aka "screamers", especially those written by Karl King. Great stuff.

But yeah, it's a form of entertainment that has become blase, and that's a shame. Nothing wrong with a little bit of blase.

As a kid it was my first time seeing an elephant up close.

Another American institution falls victim to the internet, video games, and smart phones.

Close behind will be amusement parks, Little League baseball, public zoos, bicycles, and playgrounds.

Talk about sad news. I only started going as an adult but it was something I looked forward to every summer.

I feel for the performers and the employees in the support staff.
