BuzzFeed Could Be In Legal Trouble For Publishing Trump Doc
« on: January 12, 2017, 06:11:06 AM »
While BuzzFeed weathers criticism for publishing a document cache containing unsubstantiated and scandalous allegations about President-elect Donald Trump and his confidantes, they also could face legal consequences.

If the salacious allegations in the document cache prove false, an individual named in the documents may have cause to bring a libel lawsuit against BuzzFeed.

Though the prospect of a sitting president bringing a civil suit against a media organization seems far-fetched, Trump aides outside the administration who are implicated in the documents could move forward with their own actions. Michael Cohen, counsel for the Trump Organization and an individual named in the documents, is a likely candidate in this regard.

I'm sure lawyers are examining Hulk Hogan's very successful win against Gawker to see if there are comparable issues they can pursue...

News hounds don't seem to bother following the AP Stylebook and Libel Manual anymore. The AP itself pushes the envelope too.

Given the nature of the media, the threat of defamation spreading far and wide through modern technologies is a matter of great legal concern. Defamation is the spreading of untruthful information about a person or entity that results in damages. When spoken, as on a television broadcast, an Internet video, or in a movie, defamation is called slander. When written, as on a website, newspaper, or other publication, defamation is called libel. Both slander and libel can be devastating to a person or entity, and recent media laws involve concerns such as cyberbullying, Internet stalking, and other forms of harm that modern media make readily possible.

So what is it called when the US GOVERNMENT is the one doing it (in the case of John McCain ~vs~ Donald Trump)?

It''l have to be Trump who does it. The voters of AZ just reelected him, and won't have another chance until 2022 (I continue to hope McCain leaves DC involuntarily due to ballot-box retirement). McCain's fellow Senators don't seem inclined to see a need for that service to the nation.
