Here's a suggestion for these morons...ear protection! Never go to the range without it! But that wouldn't fill up the coffers of a gun industry, would it?

If it's silent more people will stay grouped together unaware they are easier targets.

The silencer issue is indicative of just how good pro-gun militants have it in this country. They have easy access to most firearms, ammunition and a wide variety of accessories. Now they want and will apparently get unchallenged access to silencers. Next on their list: adding machine guns to their collections, without the pesky federal regulations which have kept prices for such weapons high, and which have kept violence involving such legally owned firearms at virtually zero for decades. Keep the foregoing in mind, the next time some Gun Enthusiast starts caterwauling about how persecuted gun owners are in this country.

In combination with a suppressor you get a gun shot down to 100db - much better for protecting one's hearing, don't you think?

The decibels will not be constant, will naturally vary with the environment: louder in an empty cavern and softer in well-insulated living quarters. Add some extra "padding" to a silencer like a pillow around the barrel and it may be next to inaudible.
The hearing argument is just a lame excuse for more gun stealth and gun lobby profits which will inevitably lead to more murder and mayhem--already at unconscionable levels and unnecessarily so as statistically proven by multiple countries that know better than to cultivate a deadly gun culture.

It goes on almost endlessly like this, no point bringing it all over.
I'd challenge any of them to stand anywhere 89degrees north side of a suppressed anything without ear protection.
For cavers who've never used them, suppressors basically just take the "crack" out of the shot. It does muffle the lower htz a little as well, but most of the benefit is from BEHIND the muzzle.. ie: where you stand when holding it. Break that point in front of the barrel anywhere, and you will realize just how damn loud they still are.
Using sub-sonic ammunition greatly reduces the shock wave as well and makes suppressors more effective by multiple factors as well, that part is true.

All that said, it doesn't make the DUmbasses comments any less comical.

I always thought that a silencer might come in handy if you were forced to shoot a gun in a confined space like a small room or from inside the passenger compartment of a car.

IIRC , The DUmmies favorite show, The Mythbusters did an episode on silencers.  They still wore hearing protection even when firing the guns fitted with silencers.

I didn't bother going over to that thread to lower my IQ but it is fairly easy (and quite illegal) to make your own supressor so the thought that murderous criminals would be flocking to buy suppressors is kind of silly.  To make my point, can anybody point to any mass murderers who have used suppressors? I have noticed a surprising abundance of them on wilderness living reality shows like Life Below Zero.  I can see some great advantages to hunting with them, particularly if you're hunting for your winter meat or trapping, I guess the $200 and paperwork aren't as big a barrier to purchase if you're counting on it for the edge in getting your Winter protein stocked away.

I've heard rumors that some Walmart stores sell guns but none around here do. We only have one chain store, (http://www.ruralking.com/) that sells guns, otherwise you have to go to a gun store.

There's a chance that some of the Walmart's in smaller towns around here might carry them.

Really sad since I can remember when Sears, K Mart, Walmart, Montgomery Ward all carried guns.
