Guardian: Liberals risk becoming a permanent minority in America

From The Guardian:

What will liberalism do in the new, terrifying world the 2016 election has inaugurated? More than any other presidential election in a century, its outcome turned not on issues but on resentment and alienation. It was a vote in which anger overrode optimism, a corrosive sense of failure overrode hope and in which the very impracticality of a Donald Trump presidency proved one of his strongest drawing cards. He would not improve politics, his core supporters told interviewers. He would blow it up.

Liberals have urgent work to do to block the most reckless, punitive efforts of a Trump presidency. But liberalism must also come to terms with the fact that the base on which it has rested since the 1940s in this election fell almost completely apart. The effectiveness of the Republican party’s Southern Strategy of the late 1960s in peeling off southern white Americans was the beginning of the New Deal coalition’s breakup.

The desertion of the northern, white working class in the 2016 election, should it persist, would leave liberalism without a viable electoral base. Unless the Trump victory literally splits apart the Republican party, liberalism threatens to become a permanent minority of the educated, the bi-coastal, the urban, the nonwhite, and the poor. Despite changing demographics, national elections cannot be won on that basis alone.

1. Normalizing election fraud, just like the rest of them.

No mention of the fact that Trump didn't actually win, either. Thanks Guardian.

17. Even with the voter suppression

She should have won by 20 damn points against the most hated man in America, and she would at least have WON if had she had run a good race, which she DID NOT. Pretending she did won't help us win the next one.

18. Not true...

This election was stolen.
..and it won't matter what we believe if we don't stop the GOP...I don't care about liberal or centrist labels...we all have to band together and fight the conservatives who are winning by the way because they stick together...Trump is not popular with the GOP either...but they voted for him in numbers that kept the election close thus allowing them to steal it. And I will say this...the primary hurt Clinton...had Bernie not run or at least gotten out and endorsed way earlier...Clinton would have won.

3. The electoral college win was based on roughly 100,000 votes. Hardly the death of liberalism-

especially when we have voter suppression, fake news, a politicized FBI, and a poker-playing strongman in Russia acting to topple democracy here and abroad, Eight years of letting Republicans score over 1000 political seats hasn't helped, and could have been prevented.

JFK wrote "Why England Slept" explaining British failure to pay attention before World War II was upon them. One day someone will write "Why Democrats Slept" to explain the events of leading up to the forces of darkness scoring the Oval Office--but we need to get to work now.

4. So liberalism is dead (or on its way)

In the last election ...

When we win the popular vote of the Presidential Election by nearly 3 million.
When we gain seats in the House.
When we gain seats in the Senate.

Yeah, sure sounds like liberalism is on its last legs. :)

Lesson to be learned. You cannot make people see when they willingly blind themselves.
Only one here seemed to get it.

In the last election ...

When we win the popular vote of the Presidential Election by nearly 3 million.
By way of three counties in California
When we gain seats in the House.
In favorable districts against idiot Republicans, mostly RINO's
When we gain seats in the Senate.
You were supposed to flip it, easily.

Yeah, sure sounds like liberalism is on its last legs. :)

Liberal thinking is a two-legged stool and magical thinking is one of the legs, the other is a combination of self-loating and misanthropy.  To understand it, you would have to be able to sit on that stool while juggling two elephants, an anvil and a fragmentation grenade, sans pin.

Liberalism is already a permanent minority in America. What we are seeing coming out of the left these days is not liberalism but the beginnings of a form of full on fascism.

The left doesn't get it. There is not an endless supply  of money. They can't keep promising more free shit while doing everything they can to drive jobs out of the country. Most people want to work and not subsist on welfare.

I thought along the lines of that article in 2003 and 2004. I underestimated the Rs' skill and alacrity for shooting off their own feet, at the knees.

Libs' and Progs' persistent denial, penchant for demonizing those who disagree with them, and love of loony-toony conspiracy theories bodes well if the Rs can just keep their "guns"* pointed outward.

What happens when the first two SCOTUS nominations of the Trump era come out solidly FOR voter ID? THEN the liberals will be a solid minority, and will also never win a popular vote again.

What happens when the first two SCOTUS nominations of the Trump era come out solidly FOR voter ID (AND a purple finger)? THEN the liberals will be a solid minority, and will also never win a popular vote again.

The Iraqis have a good idea there.

I should also add, ANY illegal caught voting in an election gets an automatic 10 (or other number) years in prison followed by immediate deportation.
Liberals disgust me. (Now I don't have to remember to put it on each post).

Because only the left goes searching for that which is not there in a desperate attempt to be offended about something.

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams

Suck it, DUmmies.

You have to understand that in Guardian-speak, "optimism" = hope and change, and they still actually believe that nonsense.

Sorry Guardian, there are no more liberals on the left. The left is in the USA what it has always been in the rest of the world, fascism.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

They think the last 8 years were the greatest ever. That's the problem.
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”
