The radicalization of young American Muslims continues to threaten the United States as another millennial was arrested in Suffolk, Virginia for attempting to provide money to the Islamic State and commit terrorist attacks in the country.
Lionel Nelson Williams, also known as Harun Ash-Shababi, was charged on Wednesday after a nine-month long investigation conducted by the FBI, reported The Virginian-Pilot.
Neighbors described Williams as an intelligent and kind individual, who spread information about Islam in his rural Virginia neighborhood. However, on the internet, Williams was an entirely different person.
“I can’t wait for the day that the black flag of Islam exists all over Maryland, D.C., Virginia, and Chicago,” Williams said in a private Facebook message to undercover investigators. He also posted that “it’s time for me to take a stand. I stand with #Dawlah.” According to the FBI, Dawlah is Arabic for the term “state” and used among sympathizers for the Islamic State.
He also posted videos of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leader Anwar al-Awlaki.
Williams has supported attacks on “hard targets” meaning non-civilian. He said that he would target people who could fight back.
If he’s convicted, Williams will face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
