With unemployment at supposedly 4.5% she should have NO problem finding a job.  Unless, those numbers that the administration has been putting out may not be accurate.

I just hired a 62 year-old Army vet. There's this thing called "desirable qualifications" that you may not have heard about. Try it sometime... oh wait, too late. You hitched your wagon to 15 dollar min wage for stocking shelves at the local retail outlet. Sorry that didn't work out for you. Meanwhile, the "old" guy I hired is now making 85K + health insurance.

I would take the unemployment rate with a grain of salt. The labor participation rate is low.

Sadly, this is true.  My dad's company was bought out.  About a month from his 35 yr mark they forced into retirement.  It was pitiful.   :(

Same at my place. We have two gentlemen, one is 62 the other is around 67. Here is the kicker. They have marketable skills. One is a respiratory therapist and the other one sells and fixed powered wheelchairs. Age has little if anything to do with a skill set.

True skill and trade are becoming hard to find. Back in the days when I was an engineer, I was always amazed watching the old timers in the machine rebuild shop.
I'll bet there aren't a handful of guys on the planet today that can still do this. check it out... it really is amazing knowing the tolerances involved:

Strange. At two weeks short of my 62nd BD I started a new job. Maybe ss2's problem is with marketable skills? Or an unstable job history? Or having some firings for cause (= being a PITA)?

I went into business for myself a few months ago (kind of a semi-retirement) nearing 60.  I have had to turn business away (I am an independent contractor working on ERP [mainstream functions like Payroll, HR and General Ledger] systems).

People LOVE that I am old since they know I bring a lot experience and perspective with me -- these are VERY desirable in ERP systems.

It isn't old people that are the problem.  It is old people who don't keep their skills up.

My latest move is into analytics -- that is RED HOT in business and public sector and will be for quite some time.
