DEMOCRAT MAYOR THREATENS TO IGNORE TRUMP’S IMMIGRATION ORDERS

Betsy Hodges is the Mayor of Minneapolis, MN.  She is a Democrat.

The day after Trump won the presidency, Hodges posted an anti-Trump message on Facebook that took aim at white people, and encouraged protesters to take to the streets.  Here is what she wrote:

“To those who awoke afraid and more vulnerable to a President who has pledged to attack you: I stand with you, your city stands with you, and we will find a way through. To my Muslim, Mexican, immigrant, indigenous, LGBTQ, low-income, of-color, women, Jewish, and other friends: you are not alone, I and all allies stand strong with you, we will create more and better allies, and we will find a path forward. Together.

To my fellow white people: we get to do a lot of work with one another. We have been surprised by our brothers and sisters who are so angry, scared, and confused that Donald Trump seemed like a solution to a problem. We cannot expect people of color to lead us out of this. We can’t expect blame, attack, and criticism to magically make people less angry, scared, or confused. We get to tackle our own confusions about one another and find a way forward. Together.

That is not an invitation to naiveté. People’s lives, livelihoods, safety, and well-being are at stake. We must continue, as always, to take a stand against what is coming, to fight for and with people against the meanness that is upon us. We must continue, as always, to stand for what is best in us as people – helping rather than hindering, inclusion rather than division.

The first order of business, however, is to grieve, to rage, to confess confusion, to shake with fear. Only when we let ourselves feel fully do we free our minds enough to think clearly about what is next. Then we get to remember that we have one another, we know how to organize, and we know how to stand up, dust off, and take the next step. Together.

This is how Minneapolis is strong. We come together. I believe in us.”

She didn’t stop there.

During his campaign, Trump said he would cancel all federal funding to so-called “sanctuary cities.” On Saturday, Hodges pledged to ignore President Trump when he takes office. According to Hodges, she will see to it that Minneapolis law enforcement officers will not assist federal agents in tracking down illegal aliens.

Hodges released a statement Saturday titled “Support for Immigrant Community Keeps Minneapolis Safer”:

“I will continue to stand by immigrants in Minneapolis. For years, Minneapolis has codified in ordinance that our police officers will not do the work of the Federal government and ICE regarding immigration status. If police officers were to do the work of ICE it would harm our ability to keep people safe and solve crimes. Witnesses and victims of crimes won’t come forward if they think our police officers will question or detain them about their immigration status. Our ordinance has helped us solve crime and keep communities safer. If our police were doing the work of ICE, Minneapolis would be less safe for everyone, regardless of immigration status.

In his quest to scapegoat immigrants, Donald Trump has threatened cities’ Federal funding if we do not change this practice. I repeat: I will continue to stand by and fight for immigrants in Minneapolis regardless of President-elect Trump’s threats. I will not compromise the public safety of the people of Minneapolis to satisfy Trump’s desire to put politics before public safety. If Congress follows through on President-elect Trump’s threat to cities, they will have our hardworking officers bear the brunt of their own obstructionism.  The complete failure of President-elect Trump’s allies in Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform should not be borne by our local police officers who already have a tough job to do.

Minneapolis is being built and strengthened by people from all over the world and I am grateful for their commitment to our city. I stand with them today and will continue to take that stand as the President-elect prepares to take office.”

The Minneapolis Code of Ordinances, Title 2, Chapter 19 states: “Public safety officials shall not undertake any law enforcement action for the purpose of detecting the presence of undocumented persons, or to verify immigration status, including but not limited to questioning any person or persons about their immigration status.”
