Commentary: The unbearable smugness of the press

This is all symptomatic of modern journalism’s great moral and intellectual failing: its unbearable smugness. Had Hillary Clinton won, there’d be a winking “we did it” feeling in the press, a sense that we were brave and called Trump a liar and saved the republic.

So much for that. The audience for our glib analysis and contempt for much of the electorate, it turned out, was rather limited. This was particularly true when it came to voters, the ones who turned out by the millions to deliver not only a rebuke to the political system but also the people who cover it. Trump knew what he was doing when he invited his crowds to jeer and hiss the reporters covering him. They hate us, and have for some time.

And can you blame them? Journalists love mocking Trump supporters. We insult their appearances. We dismiss them as racists and sexists. We emote on Twitter about how this or that comment or policy makes us feel one way or the other, and yet we reject their feelings as invalid.

It’s a profound failure of empathy in the service of endless posturing. There’s been some sympathy from the press, sure: the dispatches from “heroin country” that read like reports from colonial administrators checking in on the natives. But much of that starts from the assumption that Trump voters are backward, and that it’s our duty to catalogue and ultimately reverse that backwardness. What can we do to get these people to stop worshiping their false god and accept our gospel?

We diagnose them as racists in the way Dark Age clerics confused medical problems with demonic possession. Journalists, at our worst, see ourselves as a priestly caste. We believe we not only have access to the indisputable facts, but also a greater truth, a system of beliefs divined from an advanced understanding of justice.

That's the crux of the whole matter, but we're not supposed to just kiss and make up.  We're supposed to compromise.  We all know what that means.  Surrender.  To them.  No.  Not happening.  At all.

We took back the House, then the Senate and now, we denied you the Presidency.  In Illinois, - well, Southern Illinois, anyway- we unassed two Democrats and Madigan lost his supermajority.

I don't think Rahn's piece is phony so much as very shallow. He's made a decent scratch in the surface, but I don't think he realizes the depth of MSM arrogance, deceit, and self-deception. I read this piece several days ago, did Rahn give even lip-service acknowledgement of the MSM's extensive, literal, collusion - proven by Wikileaks - with The SHREW's campaign.

The earliest serious example I can think of would be the MSM withholding from the public, in 1960, the known fact of JFK's affairs and resorting to prostitutes during the campaign. They knew that in 1960 America that knowledge might prove fatal to JFK's Presidential aspirations, and rather than trusting the American public to make the right choice, arrogantly withheld what would and should have been a blockbuster news story.

While Rahn's piece could be the start of MSM introspection, the MSM, if they want to start regaining credibility, need to stare at their full ugliness and realize the paths of arrogance and deceit that got them there. As to actually regaining credibility, like a guy named John said, "You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit that proves your repentance!" Regaining trust would mean years and even decades of non-partisan reportage. I don't think the MSM have the patience or desire to do it. Nor the willingness to acknowledge how deeply their arrogance, deceit, and betrayal of trust have demolished their credibility. Speaking personally, I'm 60-something: I don't think I could ever in my remaining lifetime trust the MSM regarding politics, policy, and moral issues. EVER!!!

IMO, the root of all this whoring is the public school system and the extension into College / Universities.

Obama threatened universities by withholding money if they did not adhere to the false meme of rampant rape stories.

Trump should threaten the same for infringement on free speech that IS rampant.

I do too, actually. That article was horrifying heresy in the MSM Prog Enclave. The chances Rahn will be persona non grata at SeeBS or even nudged out the door are pretty close to certainty. Being something like twice Rahn's age, I think I can safely say, based on decades of observation, that D-partisanship, a Lib-Prog worldview, and hypocritical and deceitful pretense to objectivity are deeply ingrained in US MSM culture. Rahn's article makes a deep scratch in the surface of that, but I think it highly unlikely that even a handful of "journalists" will dig in their souls deeper than what they think are THE right views of reality and an ends-justify-most-means ethic.

IMO, the MSM will continue to condemn Rs & conservatives as racists, misogynists, fascists, puppy-kickers, and everything-evil-ists until that tactic is pounded down their throats and yanked out the other end. And any black, Hispanic, woman, or gay/lesbian who dares serve in an appointed senior position in the Trump Administration will be  condemned as Uncle Toms or some other ethnic-gender-equivalent epithet.

Yeppers. The rioters are convincing reluctant Trump voters - those who needed reassurance, at least - that they made the right choice. As for the MSM-folk and Ds whose verbal clubbings drove many to vote for Trump, they're refusing to see their mistake and are convinced that more such verbal clubbings will eventually bring enlightenment to the racists, misogynists, and other deplorables who voted for Trump. I think that everything the left has done we should but just a little bit more. Let them know what getting punched in the nose harder is like. Maybe they think before doing that again. I'm not for opening new paths though.
