The smartest people on the internet

I truly need your expertise on my filing income tax returns!

I just don't know how to solve my family's filing income tax return problem. My CPA accountant filed for an extension back in April to extend our small business and personal income tax returns, and I've been trying to contact him via email and phone calling throughout the summer months to ask him to complete my income tax filing, to no avail. Either no one picked up the phone, or when they answered the phone, they kept on telling me that they were still working on the filings. They told me that they will email me the items that they would need to do the filing. I kept waiting for months without receiving the email nor the phone calls until 4 weeks ago. Two days later I gathered and mailed to their office all of the items they requested. About three weeks ago, I drove up to his office to check for the status. Well, the person who met me that morning told me that the business income tax filing already past. I angrily asked how come my accountant did not notify me; the person then replied that it was my responsibility to know. I told them I've been trying to contact them for months, and even when I got a live person, I was never told of the deadline date to file the business income tax. The person then said I could go to another office to file my income taxes! I asked him whether their office has received the package that I mailed them. He went back and brought out my package which was not even opened!!! I swallowed my pride and anger since I know it was too late to search for another CPA.

Since tomorrow, Monday, 10/15, is the deadline to file the personal income tax. Please advise me whether I should wait for them to call me to come to their office to sign the electronic filing or to drive to their office. To be honest I don't have the confidence that they will complete my filing. What government office should I contact to report this unfortunate situation. What should I do? My wife and I are very scared what would happen should our accountant could not complete in time!

PLEASE HELP!!!

Hmmmm.  Hired a CPA working out of a refrigerator box.  And then asks the Dummies on the Island for advice.  I'd like to invest in your small business.  Where do I send the check?   :rofl:

P.S. There are penalties for late payment of taxes.  Idiot.  Gonna cry about that next?

The primitive's lying; the "CPA"'s probably his wife's brother-in-law who actually works as a roofer.

I can't imagine an authentic CPA, a certified public accountant, acting like that.  A real one, that is.

I saw no mention of them saying they already paid.  Maybe no pay means no play?

That's something I forgot about.

Maybe the primitive hadn't paid the requested fees.  Primitives are notorious for thinking that physicians and attorneys should work for free, and perhaps they think the same way about certified public accountants.

They don't want to pay nobody, the primitives.

I mean, Atman even tries to avoid paying tolls.

I had to drag mine across the finish line.  I even asked her for the bill after it was all filed, still nothing on that end.

True :bouncy: time. One of my cousins is a CPA. He's been doing my family's taxes since the late 70s when he was working in a CPA firm prepping for his CPA exam. He's now a partner in that firm. Based on working with him I've learned:

* One can file for an extension from April to August, and again past August (but I don't know the new new due date);

* BUT the taxpayer must pay, by April 15th, their best estimate of what they owe;

* While I don't remember whether we've ever had to file for an extension, we've come close once or twice, and my cousin made the process very clear - the requirement to pay by 4/15 and the August deadline date.

So either this New DU-member went to a monumental flake (plus or minus actual Certification) or the story is a BS-plated :bouncy: . Based on his purported ignorance that every state has boards for certifying and disciplining various types of licensed professionals, I'll go with BS-plated :bouncy: .

I've got an extension the last two years and then pay them off in October just because I've been super lazy.  I'm gonna start being better about it.  I've never heard from my CPA that I have to pay something in April.

From Extension of Time To File Your Tax Return (an IRS webpage):

Quote
Need more time to prepare your federal tax return? This page provides information on how to apply for an extension of time to file. Please be aware that an extension of time to file your return does not grant you any extension of time to pay your taxes. April 18 is the deadline for most to pay taxes owed and avoid penalty and interest charges.

Emphasis as on the webpage. Why the payment due date is the 18th rather than the 15th, I don't know. Maybe that's the deadline even if you file on time, but I've always assumed it was the 15th. Anyway, you may want to have a chat with your CPA.

Pete's correct.  The 'Automatic extension' is an extension of your FILING deadline, not your PAYMENT deadline, which IIRC is stated in numerous places including the form instructions, Pub 17, and the 1040 instructions.  The IRS doesn't look for perfection on this and as long as your total of estimated payments and withholding ends up close to 90% of what your actual tax liability turns out to be, you normally won't get hit with penalties for late payment.

Gina, with your beautiful tribe, I'm guessing you probably end up getting a refund most years.  The IRS is more than happy to hold your refund until the end of the extension period.

Refunds are terrible. Don't know why people are so thrilled to give the Govt an interest - free loan every year

NOPE!  Never.  I usually owe 4-5k.

I got refunds when I had no kids.
