I've noticed new behavior in public places.

I meet a lot of people in my job, I am in courts frequently, elevators, halls, court rooms, law offices, etc.

People are going out of their way to be nice to one another. Regardless of color, sex, socio-economic standing, age, it seems that Trump has brought out the best in people. Lots of "please," "hellos" to complete strangers, and more. Cops are engaging in conversation, total strangers are making eye contact and talking to one another.

The more vile and outlandish that Trump becomes, the more people seem to be making a clear choice and effort to reject his behavior, and is seems like no one has any problem in actively being nice.

I don't know about your nape of the forest, but this is Chicago-land. While we have always been good to strangers and tourists, there is a marked change in people's behavior. I once heard a furriner from New Jersey describe Chicago as having people almost as cold as our winters.

Has anyone else noticed a change? Excepting the trumpenstein activists, of course.

Forests have "napes"?  Okayyy
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

That's funny. When I was at the South Florida vs. East Carolina football game Saturday and the big screens were panning the crowd showing different fans cheering and dancing to the music during a TV timeout, the biggest cheering and clapping came from showing a guy who had on a "Make America Great Again" hat.

Now, am I saying that means Trump will win the election? No. But I did find it to be rather interesting.

No, I have not noticed new behavior. Maybe that's because civility is normal where I come from.

Bingo.

Around here, not only is it culturally preferable to be courteous to other people, also one recalls that an armed society is a polite society.

Jeez, horrid Bouncy.  Chicago is a very friendly city, having resided there for 10+ years.

No offense to my Northeast friends, but I always found NYC, Boston, Philly folks to be rude.  Try to hold a door open for someone regardless of gender and they look at you like there is an ulterior motive.  Anecdotal, sure.  But have heard the same thing from my fellow Midwesterners and Texans who now live in the NE.  Headed to DC next month, so I'll report my personal bouncies after that.😁

So, the DU-member assumes none of those polite people will be voting for Trump? Given the sludge I see from DU-folk and Trump-haters on FB, I'd guess the majority of those polite people will be voting for Trump.

I think it's more of a case that people are treated exactly how they wish to be treated; being deaf, of course I do much body-language (which is more accurate than spoken words, by the way), and I've always noticed there's certain sorts of people--primitives, probably--who radiate the aura that one senses even before they say anything, "I'm an asshole, so treat me badly......"

Reputably people in New Jersey are pretty rude; yet I lived in New Jersey for about a year back during the early 1980s, and never once met a rude person (of course, I probably never ran into walrus-face); the primitives should contemplate upon why this was.

That's a case where they themselves invite that contempt.

They look at upstaters as some sort of provincial peasants, and treat them thusly.

Don't blame yourself if you dislike them, thinking you're being uncharitable and unChristian; they bring it on themselves.

It may be an overall urban thing but particularly in the northeast in that pretty much every desire a person can have can be fulfilled within minutes.
Once they get out in the sticks they can`t begin to grasp that stuff has to get shipped in etc and there is this unknown concept to them called patience.

There are instances—rare, but they happen—where I deliberately chose to be rude, usually when dealing with a Democrat, liberal, or primitive.  There’s only two of that sort of people I could take in real life; the brooklynite primitive and the buzzy one, because they’re the only two primitives who’ve actually done meaningful things with their lives.  I wouldn’t get all kissy-huggy with either of them, but at least I’d be cordial.

I’ve mastered the art of being rude without the other person realizing it.  In most cases, I ignore primitive comments by acting as if they hadn’t been made, and because I’m deaf, there’s always that handy-dandy excuse, “oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you,” which might, or might not, be true, but usually isn’t.

The oldest trick, I developed and refined when I was a child; being at the tail-end of a large family, I had ample opportunity to practice, and use it, the frigid treatment.  Like a few other people—yes, we actually do exist—I can force myself to emit an icy-coldness that yes, can actually be physically felt.  I’ve been told it’s perhaps the most scary thing about me, but because I’m a nice guy I use it only rarely, only in cases of extremely-bad primitive manners and conduct.

And there’s the dining room table treatment.  This old place decades and generations ago housed a large family, and has large rooms.  The dining room table, Sears, Roebuck mail order circa 1926, seats eighteen, one at each end and eight on the long sides.  There’s leaves in it that one can take out, to make the table smaller, and that was done until I moved here, and put them back in, permanently, even though only the cats and I live here.

I sit at the west end of the table, closest to the door to the kitchen.  Friends usually sit in the places closest to west end.  (This is also a necessity because I need them close to understand what they’re saying.)  If I know beforehand that a primitive is coming, I stack things on the middle of the table—piles of clean and folded laundry, unopened Christmas and birthday presents if it’s that time of the year, groceries waiting to be pantried, and one time an 84-candle candelabra that was about four feet tall.

This compels the not-particularly-wanted guest to sit way down at the other end of the table, and again, there’s an excuse that might, or might not, true, although usually it’s not.  “Oh my, I’m really sorry about this mess in the middle of the table; I haven’t had a chance to put things away yet, so I hope you don’t mind.”

And then there’s the cases where I want to turn off rude people, again usually primitives, who show up at the most inconvenient time, in this life that being the nocturnal hours when I’m trying to sleep.  I sleep bereft of clothing.  If a decent and civilized person shows up during the middle of the night, usually because of some emergency, I get dressed in a hurry.  But it’s a primitive, and because I rather enjoy offending primitives, I let it hang.

And there’s the excuse, which might or might not be true, “I have a long day ahead for me, and was getting up early anyway to take a bath.  No point of going through all the time and trouble to get dressed for just a few minutes, sorry.”
