bread and cheese is garbage ...
Because my dad wouldn't let us get any sort of welfare of freebies of any kind, a lady down the road from us when I was growing up used to go get that government cheese and give it to mom (when dad wasn't looking of course). That was the best cheese ever!
I didn't realize they still produced that stuff. It's definitely NOT garbage. I'd pay good money for if it's the same as it was then.
He also used to give us peanut butter he got at the same place. I never did know where he got this stuff. I didn't care, we were so dirt ass poor when I was growing up that anything not fried potatoes, corn bread or pinto beans was fancy eating. I swear I don't think these people know what the hell poor really means. 90% of what we ate was raised in our own garden or slaughtered in our barn.
Dad used to dig holes in the garden and bury cabbage and potatoes down near the frost line... I had to go out there and dig that stuff up when we needed it.
And in case you are wondering yup... my family is 100% hillbilly, West Virginia style.
If you really ARE poor, the last damn thing you want is someone handing you free crap and feeling sorry for you. I know we never went hungry and we didn't have 2 nickels to rub together.
