After these sorts of incidences, America loves to play a little game called “I’m So Special, Hear Me Speak.” We get think pieces and people “just asking questions” and millions of commenters on news stories falling all over themselves to drop a mic literally no one will ever hear hit the floor. Being that the issue on hand is most definitely — make no mistake — to stop arguing racial in nature, this brings my fellow Caucasians out in droves, either to find some reason racism doesn’t matter or to assure black people they aren’t part of the problem. Some of these are well-intentioned, some are insidiously evil, and a small number of them (really tiny) are even actually beneficial. That said…

DEAR GOD, FELLOW WHITE PEOPLE, NOW IS THE TIME TO SHUT YOUR MOUTH-BUTT.

Seriously, unless you are a high-ranking member of the law enforcement community or have an advanced degree in race studies or are otherwise in a position where you might be able to provide actual, tangible help, no black person really wants to hear your thoughts right now. There is absolutely nothing you are going to say they have not already heard before.

They don’t want to hear excuses why this particular killing or that particular killing was “understandable given the circumstances.” They don’t want to hear the statistics you Googled five seconds ago telling them the cheapness of black lives and the police’s enthusiasm for ending them “isn’t a big deal” or “actually worse for white people.” Even you, yes you, my white liberal brother and friend of all people of color, they do not want to hear from right now, not even your condolences.

In other words, black lives only matter if the Police are doing the killing. Lets just ignore 92 dead (some of them white, some killed by whites).

You put it better than I could. it remains a fact that the biggest threat to young African Americans are armed police officers who are wantonly executing them.

My point in posting the article is that evidence is pointing to police standing down leading to a rise in violence. Once again, the police are the cause of the violence we're seeing.

26. The stats don't support this.

More young blacks are killed by young blacks than are killed by police. Heck, the current number in Chicago is already close to half the national total of cop kills for the year.

What's confusing is that we see all kinds of videos of unarmed blacks killed by police, and few whites; we hear the number of blacks killed by police, and then assume that they're all unarmed. One DUer said that the police killed thousands of young black men, when the number is an order of magnitude less, and the absolute number (for all the disproportionality) is smaller than the number of whites.

It's a problem of perception rooted in confirmation bias.

Violence of all types is a leading cause of young black deaths. Police constitute a part of it, but leaving out the "armed blacks" it's a small minority. Now, many prefer to think that black bodies either sprout firearms magically or only are counted as armed because they, the poor, innocent souls, have firearms planted on them).

One can do the simple statistical analysis to show how the disproportionality plays out in absolute excess armed and unarmed black deaths ("excess" wrt white deaths). It's not a large figure.

We hear about the difference in statistical threat: if you're young and black and male you're at X times greater risk. Part of this is because, for whatever reason, young white males have a reasonably low kill rate. Note that Latino kill rate by police are very similar to white deaths according to the data (within the margin of statistical error) and the Asian kill rate can't be evaluated because the numbers are too small to be significant.

One problem with the Latino stats is that often they're reported as black or white, not Latino, but those that are IDed as Latino are very much "white" in their percentages of deaths at police hands.

I prefer to ignore the official stats because they include too many other classes of deaths: if you're in prison and die from a stabbing that's due to law enforcement, for example.

it's sad when the facts and stats back a totally different reality than the DUmpmonkiez live in...

How did I know, when I first saw that article, before I saw it was linked on DU, that this was exactly how Libs/Progs would react?

1.) The killers in Chicago are not police, but the very thugs people in those neighborhoods have protected;

2.) Those neighborhoods have a long history of refusing to cooperate with police when investigating crimes, and of attacking effective police officers and their work.

IOW, the killers are the thugs, and the people of the affected neighborhoods have all but forced Chicago police out of their neighborhoods. The neighborhood people got what they wanted, but don't like the predictable consequences?
