primitive doesn't want to work so much

Oh my.

I think the primitive's out of luck, whether he lives in a "right to work" state or a "union monopoly only" state.

Question. I live in Alabama which is a right to work state. I requested part time hours...

Since I now collect SS every month. They have me on mandatory overtime almost 50 hours a week. I requested part time but no word back. I have googled but not straight answer. Anyone know?

And yes it's Alabama, so don't start except for Roll Tide. Just please answer and don't hijack the thread. Thanks in advance.

1. I worked in Indiana which is a right to work state

We didn't have to make any accommodations like part time work for someone collecting SS (and we were union) unless we wanted to do so. Is that what you wanted to know?

2. We aren't union but get taxed if earn over a certain amount which is why I'm asking.

Oh geezuz gawd.

Just do the work and pay the taxes.

It's not going to kill you.

4. open an IRA

That allows you to put away the "taxable" income.

I'm not a financial guy but I'm pretty sure there's someone at your bank or credit union that can help out.

The "Right to work.... (for less)" simply means you are an at will employee. Basically, you can be fired for any reason if your employer decides you are a problem.

3. You have no recourse. Basically they can do (or not do) whatever they want.

Sorry.

Outside of certain federal mandates such as OSHA, minimum wage, required breaks, FMLA (if your employer is large enough) and wage/hour laws mandating which kinds of jobs require hourly and overtime payments, the "right to work" state laws basically take away all your rights except the right to get screwed over by the employer.

The only possible loophole *might* be if your employer has an "employee handbook" or "personnel manual" that makes explicit promises or states policies that could reasonably be construed as such promises. If you have such a document and you think there's such a possibility, your best option is to get someone versed in Alabama employment law to review it for you.

I wish there were a more hopeful answer, but I don't think there is.

I am screwed.

Groan.

Just do the work and pay the taxes.

You're a primitive; you like taxes, and the more, the better.

And besides, one still comes out ahead.

6. I hope you asked nicely because in a Right to Work state they can fire you for any reason

or no reason at all. In other words, if they decide one day that you annoyed them, boom you can be gone.

I don't think they have a requirement to give you part time but certain states do have different laws on the books about that. I would just tread carefully.

7. I think you're confused about

the meaning of "right to work". It doesn't really have anything to do with your right to a job. It's a euphemism for "you can't be forced to contribute to a union even when a union is bargaining for you". In other words it's a union busting measure masquerading as giving you the "right" to undermine a union.

But in no state, even the most progressive as far as I know, do you have the right to work only as many hours as suits you. You can ask, nothing more. If you just started to collect SS recently and you now regret it, you may be able to revoke your decision and put off collecting until you stop working. Call your local S.S. office soon!

Why are they always trying to get out of taxes?  I thought taxes were good?

Where do they think the money comes that flows out from the disability gravy train they all try to hop on to?

primitive doesn't realize this is (in part) an unintended consequence of Obamacare. - Less people working more hours because an employer's 'contribution' is on a per employee basis, not per hour. To cut the primitive to part time would mean hiring somebody else, and paying more obamacare subsidy. - the company would end up taking the hit to provide the primitive with the ability to double dip.. so, t'aint gonna happen.

Why are they always so wrong about everything?  "Right to work" does not equal "at will employee."  As far as I know, all 50 states are "at will."  DUmb as usual.  And yeah, just go get a part time job.  What is so hard about this?

By sheer coincidence, if you decide that one day the company annoys you, boom, you can quit and be gone.

That is called equitable and fair, and You (D)Ummies always like to leave that part out.

So you are on SS and still working.  Assuming the position is full time and you do not want to work full time then retire and go be a walmart greeter. Or quit taking SS.

Believe me dummie, the company does not want to coddle your ass and they obviously need the work done so either suck it up or retire.  Let some poor bastard that would kill for 50 hours a week get the job.  God knows there are approx 90 million or so that would jump at the chance.

It always cracks me up when I see this parroted over and over.
I know where I work, I can just fire someone for being blonde, mexican, muslim, male, just whatever I feel like that day. And it's always a goal of mine to fire good employees just because I don't like the looks of them, it makes my job SO much easier and is really good for the company and all...
Yea, RTW states are just terrible.
The worst part is they actually believe that #$@# and yet, are still allowed to vote.

"At will" employment is, AFAIK, the law in every state, though union contracts can modify that for covered employees. I start a new job next week, after a 3-month job search. Every place to which I applied informed me in their application that employment with those companies is "at will". I live in CA, which is not a right to work state. That DU-folk think "at will" employment is peculiar to right to work states shows how inexperienced they are at being employed.
