Tappanzee Rip Off -- coming soon to Massachusetts.

We traveled to PA in May and crossed the Tappan Zee Bridge on the way. Not keeping up on NY traffic news, we were surprised to see that the toll booths were gone. We apparently missed any warning signs about "Tolls By Mail," and today received our first bill for $5 -- plus a $5 late fee. How can it be late if we never received a bill in the first place? Our trip was within two weeks of the new system being implemented. Going to the Tolls By Mail web site, we couldn't even pay online, despite the bill saying we could.

I'm more concerned with the "late fee." We never got a bill, so how could it be late? It seems like a great source of extra revenue for the Turnpike Authority, as I'd bet most people will just pay the 100% surcharge because it's such a hassle to contest it.

Coming soon to the Massachusetts Turnpike!

Uh, no, not even in NYC. It's always one reason I went north of the city before I went south to go elsewhere.

3. Get the EZ Pass box!

They're gonna track you one way or another, and the EZ Pass box just takes your cash. You load it up with a pre-determined amount each month (or quarter, if you don't do a lot of toll driving) up to a pre-designated point (they don't refill it if you don't spend it) and they just take it out of your account.

4. I live in CT. We have no toll roads.

So I occasionally drive on the NJ turnpike or the MASS PIKE, but in Western Mass...two exits. Toll total about 45¢. And EZ Pass isn't accepted on Florida's for-profit privatized highways (Florida is where family lives, and the only other place I'm likely to be driving). It just doesn't make any sense to have an EZ Pass. This camera scam on the Tappan Zee is a blatant rip-off. Your response is a good example...just deposit money with them and some day maybe you might use it. Bullshit.

^^^ I don't understand - Atman must realize that this is simply another way that the all knowing state extracts money from his pocket. I would think that he would fully support the state deciding how to extract and spend his money.

8. They are trying to push getting an EZPass

I'm in no way defending them charging you a late fee, but the state does incur extra money by not having the automatic deduction from you because it requires human intervention. I hate it myself.

And they eliminated the Toll Booths, not the Toll. That is the other place they can save money, no people in the Toll Booth.

^^^ I wounder if they were preparing for the advent of the $15/hour minimum wage?

I see pieces of the Tapanzee bridge coming down the road everyday, it's cheaper to take them to Morehead city and load on a barge than to haul them from Virginia by truck.  And this is all due to tolls and unions.

I go over the Tappan Zee rather regularly for work.  You have to miss the glaringly-obvious toll lanes to do what Assman did.  And if you miss the toll lanes, you mean to miss them.  Assman got caught, and he's pissed.

I thought the explanation, when it finally came out, would be something like that.

I haven't been back to the NYC area for a long time, but they had put in the EZ-Pass and other special lanes long before I left.  BSS is right that they are all clearly marked, which I'd assume to still be the case.  The only hitch is that the traffic back-ups often outpace the lane markings, and the regular travelers through the tolls are all familiar with them and lined up before the stranger sees where to go.  It's at times like that you have to drive like a New Yorker and wedge your way into the correct lane.

Talk about 'change you can believe in'  I have been camping all summer and at regular intervals find myself stuck in traffic waiting to pay my fair share for the betterment of society.  Yes, it is easier to hit the trans pass lane and speed on through but one car does not have a transponder in it so on the few times I use it I pay.  ( I also no longer have a real address which makes it problematic receiving mail from them if I just 'drive through' without the transponder).   And it is not really worth the trouble to get an extra transponder since I would use it so infrequently (see the thread about lines and plastic chairs ... getting a transponder here means dealing with Thelma and Patty ... and they are always packed to the rafters with problem children.)

Now I love when I have can do sixty in the open road tolling lane with the trans pass or breeze through the others booths at twenty five or so but, when in comes to the pay lane it is hurry up and wait.  People, how damn difficult is it to have the change ready??? :argh:

Sound to me like he zipped through the EZPass lane without an EZPass device and got tolled at full price plus fined.

That's what I'm thinking, too. I'm on the other coast, and avoid toll bridges to the degree I can, but there is one I use very occasionally. There are FastPass lanes, and regular toll lanes, of course, and they are marked with pavement markings and large lighted signs over the relevant booths/lanes. One would have a very hard time accidentally/unknowingly zipping through the FastPass lane instead using a toll booth lane without first hitting a car or three.

So, I had to look it up - Seems they got rid of the cash toll lines months ago, and its either EZPass or toll by mail. It looks like the DUmbass didn't pay attention to what he was doing.

Likely possibilities: "Atman" or family mistook the first bill for an advertisement an tossed it; the postal system delivered it to the wrong house (or city or state or country or continent or planet) and the neighbor @#$%-canned it; the bridge authority failed to send the bill or billed the wrong address. Whether "Atman"/family screwed up or one of Libs'/Progs' beloved big-government agencies screwed up, it's all the same to me. Directly or indirectly, "Atman" should

You know, this bothered me all night long, keeping me awake, because I was sure my good friend Atman had lied somewhere in his details, as he always does.

For no particular reason, this:

Quote
http://triblive.com/opinion/ericheyl/10875004-74/toll-turnpike-commission

Ludicrous legislation takes toll on Pennsylvania Turnpike

Slam on the brakes.

That's what state lawmakers want to do to increasingly frequent instances of motorists skirting payment of Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls.

The problem wouldn't be nearly as prevalent had many of those same legislators years ago taken a detour around the lame-brain idea that directly resulted in turnpike travel becoming significantly more costly. How costly? Pretty soon only Saudi Arabian sheiks will be able to afford the outrageous tolls, though those guys probably prefer to fly their personal planes from Pittsburgh to Breezewood.

Those lacking private jet transportation sidestep the tolls in renegade fashion. They fly through toll booth areas without paying, despite the fact photos of their license plates are taken to make them easily identifiable scofflaws.

The Turnpike Commission lost $5.4 million last year to Chevy Suburban outlaws.....

Now, my good friend Atman insists Connecticut has no toll roads.

I'd like third-party verification on that, because I, franksolich, remember Connecticut differently.

And it is eminently possible my good friend Atman thinks his state has no toll roads because he drives by without stopping to pay.

During the late 1970s, early 1980s, many times I drove through Connecticut on my way to Springfield, Massachusetts, where I was oftentimes a guest of an elderly couple of Italianate derivation; he was an M.D.

It seems to me I recall toll roads in Connecticut at that time--but I could be in error.  The memory's not as infallible as it was when I was young.  Hence the request for third-party verification: yes or no, Connecticut has no toll roads.

Now, my good friend Atman might angrily insist, "but that was more than 35 years ago....."

But I'm under the impression that despite all these grandiose promises that something after it's paid for is going to be free, once a toll road or a toll bridge, it's a toll road for ever and ever, amen.

- - - - - - - - -

I could never understand why people just zip by toll collectors after throwing some meager coins their directions; it's as if these living, breathing, thinking, feeling human beings are simply pieces of inanimate furniture.

<<<always found toll collectors a fascinating breed, and when given the opportunity, pause and chat with them, while digging around for coinage, asking how their life's going, asking how the wife is, asking if the kids are behaving, asking what they think about the weather, whatnot.

They seem to appreciate this, that someone is acknowledging them not only as human beings, but as interesting human beings.

Of course, one should understand that there's no toll roads on 99.9999% of the mileage of highway franksolich travels; the nearest ones around here's in Kansas, and I don't go down south very often.  There's some over in Illinois, and I do use those rather more often--but again, negligibly.

<<<so for me, toll roads are a novelty, and when I encounter one, I like to pause and see what makes it tick.

I hated working in Pittsburgh a few years ago. It seemed like everywhere I wanted to go had a toll booth. But in particular, one toll booth had a guy working in it who was a huge Georgia Bulldog fan. I'd stop and talk to him forever unless someone pulled up behind me. On more than one occasion, I'd pull out of the way then back up to the booth. He enjoyed it, I enjoyed it but he still charged me..:(
