"The Tobster" ::)

Star Member Tobin S. (8,839 posts)

Somebody told me I was brilliant today.

It was a definite bolster to the ol' ego considering current events in the life of the Tobster.

I know I'm smart. I've got a bachelor's degree and finished school with a 3.952 GPA. But there is a kind of intelligence that's so much more important than the ability to get good grades in school. That kind of intelligence is emotional intelligence. It requires that you have the capacity for empathy, something that is sorely lacking in American culture today.

For that reason, my grandpa S., who didn't get past the 8th grade, was brilliant compared to most people in America today, including many of those who have advanced degrees...especially MBAs.

So what actually happened was he did something typically stupid (which is normal for him), someone nearby saw it and sarcastically said "Brilliant!", and he thought they really meant it.

And having difficulties filling out the claims forms.

Wait a second...  this neanderthal claims to have a degree? with a near 4.0?  Something tells me he also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once.

He does have a degree... in business I think it was.  I know that cause he posted a pic of it at the dump in cap and gown.  Seems to me like it was last year.  Dunno about the GPA.

Just goes to show you can "educate" a monkey in today's colleges.

I would imagine that your Grandfather was very intelligent.  For reasons, you have no hope, and are completely incapable, of comprehending.

Amber's doesn't count since she doesn't have the paperwork to prove it.

My SO has no Idea!

I have B.A. in Communications from MSSU. But I lost my copies of my transcripts due to the tornado and my flash drive with the electric copy getting stolen at a shelter. I have become delinquent in the payments of the loans due to no job since May 22, 2011. To get the transcripts I have to contact a clearinghouse and set up a payment plan. According to them I must get a paycheck so they can use the numbers on it to start to take payments off of it or my bank account number ( I don't have a bank account).

My SO keeps showing me jobs in my field and is yelling at me to apply. "Stop wasting your education" he says. Those jobs want copies of my transcripts. I can't give them what I no longer have. It like he is putting salt in a very open wound. He won't listen or understand. For now all I can do is pray for one of the fast food or clerk jobs to call. I am hurting so bad and he just won't stop and see what is going on.

So many are in a very similar boat right now in this country. It is a catch 22 for so many, need proof of education to get the job they are trained for, but can't get it due to not working and going delinquent. Thus, can not get the paperwork to change things.

And I am sure they to get to hear it from loved ones. But it still makes you feel alone in this world

So many people are having their hands slapped away from the golden ring because they don't have flash drives or bank accounts or paychecks.  It's a catch 22.

Was this supposed to be a coherent statement?

If you got a high school diploma, you were given one; if you lost it, a potential employer - or the dude(tte) who received and lost it - could contact the high school or school district to confirm graduation (or get a replacement certificate). Ditto for a GED. Or a trade school or college - diplomas, certificates, and transcripts (in nearly 40 years of working in my chosen career I have NEVER had a prospective employer ask for my transcripts, not even at my first or second job in my career).

If you got laid off from a job or had jobs with relevant experience, list them on your resume' and/or job application. Prospective employers check out what is listed. Extended periods of employment during an economic downturn (e.g. the 2000-2002 dot-bomb recession or the current recession and weak economy) won't raise an eyebrow if you have an otherwise decent work history and needed skills (BTDT, got more T-shirts than I like!).

BTW, what in Hades does "going delinquent" mean? Getting a criminal record? Flaking out and not really graduating? Flaking out and having an unexplained lengthy employment history gap? Getting canned and burning bridges? Sounds like this would be the appropriate response:

:ownit:

As most 8- or 10-year-olds understand, actions have consequences. Doing something stupid and whining when there are consequences is childish and moronic.

Reading a bit between the lines, Is LFR whining about consequences of her past stupidity that she is currently experiencing?

I just had my employer ask me for mine in order to move me to a higher grade. And even if an employer contacts a school directly they still won't release records in this situatuon. They basically have a hold on releasing them to anyone when student loans are behind. Mine aren't but I just did a little research and what's funny is her beloved federal gov ie dept of education who now services all loans like this are the one encouraging colleges to use this as a tactic for repayment.  and it works to since let's not forget she eventually called that clearinghouse and worked out basically the cost of a mcdonalds breakfast as payment every month o eventually obtain err transcript. But you are right in that not having a bank account, job, asking for a deferral, etc to the point her transcripts were held hostage is totally on her.

Ah, I missed seeing that earlier in her post that she was in arrears on paying a student loan. That, plus the tornado, changes the picture (in my mind) some. Still, I suspect that if she had been paying on her loan she wouldn't have the problem with getting her transcripts. As for transcripts being requested or required, I guess I work in the wrong industry (and have done so for so long that my son advised me during a past job search that with my experience level, even listing my degree on my resume' wasn't necessary). But if I had to request my transcripts the barrier, if any, would not be the status of my student loan.

Probably is industry related. Even my ex husband had to provide it wheb he made a recent change of employers and he's worked in his industry for 30 years. Wonder if it has anything to do with the lying society we have too. May peiole saying they are degreed when they aren't. Would not surprise me. And yes, had she had some minimal payment arrangement with her student loan or applied for a hardship deferral she would have been in good standing and could have obtained her transcript. As the story played out they ended up requiring her to pay like 10 bucks a month once an I come based repayment plan was made so hardly makes sense why she didn't set that up to begin with and avoided all the transcript drama entirely.

Funny thing about that... having a good rapport with each and every past employer I've ever worked, any one of them would likely be more than happy to pull my old papers out of the file and make a photocopy for me. Is such a simple thing beyond the scope of comprehension for these DUmmies? Oh wait, I guess that paperwork would actually have to exist before you could do something like that...

Didn't TubbyS just get fired from his job and admit to cussing up a storm at his coworkers and boss?  Is that what emotional intelligence is?
