Good Stuff -- for a change . . .
« on: July 02, 2016, 09:13:21 AM »
I've been around these pages for some time now, early 2008 I think, and I know we spend a lot of time ogling weird critters and jagoffs from the DU side of things. But I don't want to dwell on that at all because this is good stuff and I am pleased.

Forget politics for a minute. Forget all those incredible shitsticks that defy everything that the Founders had envisioned, and have at least to some extent destroyed all that they and others have fought for, created, and otherwise paid for.

It's a little thing, but it's the little things that add up.

A former colleague of mine, an Army bandsman, with whom I served some 37 years ago, is on her way to my area. No, not to visit me, but to adopt a dog.

Remington is a hound mix, very quiet and unassuming. He gets along with everybody and other animals. Peggy and Remington have already bonded, without having seen each other, just by the power of the internet.

Peggy and Remington, along with Mrs. E and our pack, will convene and celebrate this new beginning.

It's a wonderful thing.

This is a good place for this one.

Football player walks into animal shelter and asks to adopt 'dog that's been here a long time'

Last weekend, Baltimore Ravens Offensive Tackle Ronnie Stanley walked into local shelter BARCS with one goal in mind: "We are looking for a dog that's been here a long time and maybe not-so-adoptable."

BARCS, an animal shelter and care center, posted on their Facebook page about the event. Stanley came to the shelter with his girlfriend, and teammate Alexander Lewis.

According to BARCS, "not-so-adoptable" can mean traits like being old, having medical conditions, and "physically imperfect." Staff showed the trio of visitors a number of options and they decided on Winter, a six-year-old dog that has been in BARCS' care since mid-May.

BARCS described the dog and her harsh life: "Beautiful Winter is a dog who has spent most of her six years of life falling into sad, unfortunate situations. She was found on a vacant property, on a hot day with no electricity, or open windows. She was dehydrated and extremely frightened. Winter has a long, hanging belly, mostly likely a result of over breeding--something we see far too often at our shelter. Due to her age, her belly is not something that will ever tighten up."

I think it's great. This guy has the money that he could have bought any breed he wanted, but chose to get a rescue dog.

This is literally what separates us from the rest of the 'animals'.  Thank you Eupher and thundley for sharing both of these stories.

This turned out well, but with a bit of a twist.

Remington has basically known only the rescue center from which he was adopted. He had his kennel, the cat area, a small yard in which he did his business, and a short half-mile walk. That's what he's known for the past three years.

Okay, now insert him in a situation where there are four loose dogs around him. He reacted with faux aggression. Snarling, showing of teeth, and even a faux fight that my dog, Maya, didn't recognize as faux. After the dogs were separated, Remington went to a crate in a spare bedroom to calm down. Maya was unhurt and Remington suffered no damage either.

That faux aggression continued (with no further fights, faux or otherwise) until Peggy and Remington left this morning.

Very puzzling - Remington has never shown aggression to any other animal, but apparently defended himself with distinction against the rescue center's bully, a boxer mix named Gidget, a couple years ago.

We believe that Remington will be fine in a setting that he can get accustomed to. Peggy has a cat, but Remington has never had problems with cats.

The whole thing is based on contingencies -- if it doesn't work out, Peggy can bring Remington back. She's interested in working with him, so we have high hopes things will turn out fine once he is acclimated to his new surroundings.
