Here is an article from the local paper, including a pic. How did I know ...?
As soon as I read, "My grandfather was only one of two pilots who returned from a fleet of 47 during the Battle of Midway," in the article Ptarm linked I knew her grandfather had flown in torpedo bombers (VT6, from the Enterprise?). Their planes were obsolete, and the three torpedo bomber squadrons that attacked the Japanese carrier group arrived unescorted. Their sacrifice was not for naught, as the fighter cover for the Japanese carrier group were drawn down to low altitude, and their gas and ammunition depleted. When USN dive bombers arrived, also unescorted, they faced little fighter opposition, and 3 of the carrier group's carriers were mortally wounded. There's a lot more to the story of that fight, and I think Gordon Prange's book title,
Miracle at Midway[/i] may be literally true. Kami Mueller's grandfather was a hero who went through Hell.
