Exorcism rant

The other day I went to a huge doctor's office with a friend to take her teen in to see a shrink.  We were joking around about her having her ex-bf exorcised and blah blah blah in the waiting room.  The doctor I guess heard me and when she took the girl back for her session remarked that she does exorcisms and was I making fun of her for that.....

What the freaking freak is a shrink with no religious training what so ever doing trying to perform an exorcism!??!?!  How could she possibly feel that she could truly deal with an actual case of possession?  I mean very very few people who think they are possessed actual are but there are those random cases where some really messed up stuff happens and the person is actually possessed.

I feel like punching her in the eye and then explaining that when you meet someone actually possessed with a demon maybe you should call the Pope, Billy Graham, or someone who didn't get their degree and The University of Liberalism and Non-belief!

Yes because people in the psychiatric field never have faith   The reason most psychologists and psychiatrist see a therapist themselves is not because they're crazy....They listen to people dump all of their life problems on them for 8 to 12 hours a day,they also get to hear  and see the darkest and sickest shit that human beings have to offer. It takes a toll on a person mentally and emotionally so  I completely understand this.

Pretty much, and if they are, they will not find a "cure"  through psychology or psychiatry that they cannot find on their own through prayer and faith.   I've witnessed the change in some pretty sick people by the power of prayer and Christian fellowship.   Psychiatry is nothing more than a self-examination.  It does nothing to heal the sick soul which is often an extension of mental illness.

Did the world learn nothing from watching eleven years of "Frasier"?  He was never right about anything.

I didn't know the autistic and the retarded sought psychiatric analysis.  You are confusing medical arts with the psychiatric trade.  Wholly different situations.

I think you're mixing up psychiatry with psychology. You should ask Schade or Jty the question about the autistic and their dealings with psychiatrists and psychologists Psychiatrists have to be able to dispense medications so they have to have a medical degree. No, I'm not mixing up psychiatry with psychology.  Sigmund Freud was a psychiatrist (but often called a psychologist) while Dr. Joyce Brothers is a psychologist.  It's a fine line at times.

It is true that psychiatrists are medically trained.  They can prescribe medicines.  I wouldn't go to one for cancer treatment or looking for a cure for heart disease. 

No, faith in God does not cure everything, but no one is completely cured without it.  Some diseases kill us regardless of faith.  Even Jesus himself didn't get to die from old age.

Mental illnesses have a much better chance of healing through faith in God than though faith in man.  That's just the way we are.

I am a Christian, but that seems extreme.  But I am pretty mistrustful of both, so I understand the gestalt of your post.

The human mental THINKING processes are still very vaguely understood.  The science behind their study, much less application, is still very soft and squishy.

I think what is being confused in this discussion is spiritual health versus mental health. They are not one in the same. The two can and do exist at times, but not always. The human brain and the glands that feed its function are fallable like any other body part and sometimes require MEDICAL treatment to come into some harmony. THAT is what the psychiatrist tries to work on.

It doesn't really matter what the exorcist (or doctor, or psych, or shaman) thinks and believes in this, all that matters is that the person they are working on thinks it's real and also believes the exorcist (or whatever) knows what he or she is doing.
