primitive's got multiple fund-raisers going on

Oh my.

I think we already know this primitive; I'll look it up.

All right, DUers. My car flunked inspection and I can't afford the repairs

I'll be honest with you. I need some money so I can get my car fixed up to pass inspection.

I need new tires, a ball joint on my right front wheel, and a wheel alignment so my new tires don't end up ruined once they're on my car. My credit card is maxed out and I can't pay $300-$400 just to get my car back on the road without risking either getting pulled over by the cops or--even worse--my right front wheel coming off while I'm driving!

Here's what isn't safe: my right front wheel shimmies and, when the mechanic manipulated the wheel, it was loose from side to side. I'm afraid to drive it now.

https://www.gofundme.com/22md3jrq

So far she's gotten $500, the goal being $550, but that might be fake, as it's all from one single donor.

I normally don't like to ask for help, but I'm facing electrical shutoff

https://www.gofundme.com/qdnkeskk

Not only is my electric bill exorbitant, but it's accumulating late charges because I can't pay the damn thing on a disability check of just over $1100. On top of that, I'm facing a mechanic's lien on my car because of a back $210 repair charge, not to mention back charges of medical deductibles and copays of which I have to rid the burden. I'm afraid I might end up in the dark, without a car, and in debt up to my eyeballs.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Any excess will be donated to my local food bank.

On that one, she got $2,575, the goal being $2,750.

OK, DUers. I hate to beg, but my cats need vet care

and I don't have the money to get them their shots. I started another gofundme campaign to get vet care for the cats so I won't have to give them up, as well as a cheap bed for me. I have to throw away my bed because of bed bugs and now I'm sleeping on an air mattress, which I don't mind if it weren't for the cats.

I'm not going to need near as much to get the cats to the vet as I did to get me away from the ex-roomie.

https://www.gofundme.com/7cx9gd4s

On this one, she got $160, the goal being $350.

Lemme check to see if we already know this one.

I lost track of all the begging.  My overall comment is... :rotf:

An electric bill over a grand?  Someone has been ignoring their mailed invoices.

The car... ball joints, alignment, and some lightly USED tires, you might just squeak in under $500 for parts and labor.

It would be close.

Regardless of whether her disability is real or not - she doesn't look old, and while disability isn't confined to the old, "disability" has of late become the refuge of people not willing to seek work after their year or two (or whatever it is) of unemployment runs out - (Crazy?) Cat Lady needs to find a home for her cats and stop using her disability $$ for cat food, toys, and veterinarian care. Maybe she could also look into her local bus systems discounts for those with disabilities (the bus and light rail service here in Silicon Valley charges folks with certified disabilities half fare or less).

seriously ?

If you are that poor primitive, go used. Find a used tire place, each one will cost less than 50 in most cases. Get a junkyard pull for the ball joint. 75 bucks tops. then just have a mechanic slap that in.

Probably cost half of what you want to get the bad tire and ball joint replaced including labor. Get inspected, then work on the other three tires later.

It (The GFM) says that this primitive lives in Nazareth PA. I drive through that town every work day. Used to be the home of Nazareth Speedway but that has been closed for over ten years now. Mario Andretti and family still live in the area. Cement is the big industry in Nazareth and it's the home of the Martin Guitar Company. It's not a bad place to live by any measure, a bit crowded for me but still not bad.

EDIT: I guess what I'm trying to say is if your on a budget, in NE PA, without looking too hard you could find less expensive places to camp out.

It made me laugh.  I probably could have paid all of that off with a single paycheck.

As for the busted cars, I'm going with the theory that this one buys at tote-the-note lots and trades the old car in once it's too worn out to drive anymore.  They fix it up and resell it, and she doesn't have to pay for repairs.

Since primitives are so bad at math, I figured I'd do the quick math for them.  Since February 7th, this primitive has grifted $3,235 in cold cash from other primitives.  That works out to be a cool $50 a day, or $250 a week since the beginning of February, tax free.

More of you primitives need to get on board and post your own links to your own little beg-a-thons on the DU.

There is something peaceful about the junkyard as long as they're not assholes and jam cars in door-to-door like the one I went to last week.

That sucks.  How are you supposed to get anything out of them that way?

I pretty much only deal with two yards around here anymore, both of them pick-n-pulls.  One charges a buck to get in, so it helps to keep some of the riff-raff out.

There are three pick-n-pulls around here.  The closest one is terrible.  The main one (Pull-A-Part) is always crowded.  A third is the next county over and is hit or miss.

12. Could you save enough to cover it if you gave up e-cigs?

I see you have an e-cig forum link in your sig, which implies you are using them. I've seen a cost estimate for them of $1500-$2000 a year. If you can break that habit, that might be a way to find some extra money in your budget.

14. I do it myself, and it's pretty cheap for me

I spend about $30 a month on e-cigs, which is pleasurable AFAIC. I'm not ready to quit vaping yet, but I'm taking in a lot less nicotine than I did when I first switched from stinkies to vapor products.

BTW, what does vaping have to do with an immediate, expensive car repair other than to lecture and look down on me? I don't question your habits, so I'd appreciate not being spoken down to. And don't pressure me to give up e-cigs. I had enough of a time giving up smoking BY switching to e-cigs. I don't like the condescending tone.

On one you've raised almost 3 grand since February.

I find it curious. Also you comment on having bought two cars in three years? I haven't had the money to do that in 10 years.

Sorry, many of us are skeptical about these requests.

18. I'd appreciate that you not accuse me of fraud

I used the money for the purpose I requested. It isn't my fault I fell on hard times and had to ask for a hand up.

The 3 grand I needed for final utility bills, medical bills, and moving expenses just to get my ex-roomies off my back, as well as get away from their abusive behavior because they were making my life a living hell. I just was looking for some peace and quiet without being harassed daily.

It took one of my friends finally to get them to back off.

19. It has to do with budgeting for emergencies.

It's clear from the number of gofundme requests you've posted here that you don't have extra room in your budget for luxuries right now.

Dropping the e-cig habit would net $360 a year for you - which wouldn't solve all your money problems, but sounds like it might have been enough for this round of car repairs. I know for myself, I couldn't go begging for money from my friends if I know I was going to spend some of it on smoking. I'd have to do everything I could myself to make ends meet first, and THEN ask for help if I was still in a crisis situation.

24. I supported a family of three on under 12k a year

for a couple years. I've lived without electricity or running water for half a year. At that point in my life I didn't have access to a car, I had to walk everywhere. I've gone years without health insurance for my family (have it now though!). I've scavenged for food. I still pick up found food from the side of the road - some habits are hard to break. The last time I served roadside trash for dinner was about two weeks ago. It was an unopened can of beans, about a year or two expired, but it was fine. I was excited when I found it. Today I just got back from the grocery store - 18 miles round trip in light rain without using a car, but that's fine - I have a bike. I've ridden it 136 miles this week - it's how I commute to work.

I'm sure the folks at conservative cave will have a field day with that. But that's okay, I'm self-sufficient, I'm not asking anything of them.*

But my point is: I scale back if I can, and if I need to. I wouldn't beg people for money if I were spending any part of it on smoking. I just can't get past asking other people to donate part of their salary to cover that. You need to do everything you can to make your dollars cover your expenses before doing the gofundme requests and expecting people here to continue donating 50 bucks a day to your living expenses.

*very true; one can't argue with that.

Well, she's busted.
