Plan in works to protect endangered white-tailed ptarmigan

The New Mexico Game and Fish Department announced Monday that it will begin working with Taos County to devise the first management plan for the ptarmigan in early May. This effort, the agency says, aims to better protect the ground-nesting bird under the New Mexico Wildlife Conservation Act.
White-tailed ptarmigans, the smallest member of the grouse family, have the build of a chicken and elaborate markings. They grow to just beyond a foot, and are most prolific in the cold climates of Canada and Alaska. But they have a presence in New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains, between Lake Peak and Santa Fe Baldy, because they prefer to remain at altitudes above 11,800 feet, according to John Bulger of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.

Bulger said he anticipates little resistance from the public in efforts to protect the ptarmigan.
