I went to the super market last week...........

and there was a sign in the produce department, near the bananas. It read: "Do not break the banana bunches apart". Now there were no less than 6 bananas in each bunch. I want only 3 bananas, I broke a bunch. I'm not paying for what I don't want.

When I was a kid, you could break a bunch of grapes & take the amount you wanted. Now they package them in bags usually weighing 2 lbs. I've taken a bag found a produce worker & told him I want only 1/2 lb. He did it, but he wasn't happy.

3. That's nuts. I always take only the bananas I want. Same with tomatoes.

And I still usually end up with bananas getting made into banana bread because
they don't get eaten!

4. My supermarket doesn't have any such restrictions

But there always seems to be a lot of singles that people break off and nobody will buy. For me it's kind of a boon because often I want ripe bananas for cooking or eating right away and all the bunches are green.

5. In Illinois it's allowed by law that you can split an egg carton in half and buy 6 eggs.

Not sure how you'd get it through those unmanned checkout lines.

8. Those big bags of grapes and cherries are really annoying.

I agree, sometimes you only want a little spray of grapes or a handful of cherries. Why do you have to buy 2 lbs? I guess the supermarkets had too much waste with loose fruit.

I have been seeing bags of 5 or 6 stem tomatoes. I still open the bags and take out two tomatoes which is all I need for a week. I also break the banana bunches!

13. I seek out the singles and pairs...

I buy them for my husband and he only needs a couple per week. I can freeze some if I buy a whole bunch but I usually look for the individuals that others have broken off. I don't understand why a store wouldn't allow people to buy what they want when sold by the pound.

DUmmies aren't supposed to use self checkout lines. That's putting people out of jobs. Of course if you split a carton of eggs, the UPC code doesn't change, so you're still paying for a dozen.

However, I can't think of any store I've been in, in the last 20 years or so, that didn't sell eggs by 1/2, 1, and 1 1/2 dozen cartons. Most convenient stores even sell 1/2 and 1 dozen cartons.

Using DUmmie logic, if I take the half without the UPC code, those eggs are the free half of the broken dozen.

Sounds to me like the federal government is going to have to step in and take control of this situation where people are going into stores and grabbing whatever the hell they want.  Like Bernie says, we don't need 23 types of underarm deodorant and we don't need to be grabbing odd quantities of eggs and bananas.

With any luck, DU member "mrmpa" will find a perfect half-bunch and discover when (s)he gets home that the person who split the larger bunch accidentally broke the skin on one or two of the bananas "mrmpa" bought. Two or three such instances, and "mrmpa" might understand the reason for the store's sign ... if "mrmpa" doesn't blame the store instead of the RUDE previous customer.

They want to sell the prepackaged grapes like that, because they don't want your grubby, filthy hands pawing all over them, splitting them apart, crushing half of them.  Maybe the Health Department had something to say about it.
