People living in the highly secretive country have been warned by Kim Jong-un’s government to prepare to ‘chew on roots of plants once again’.

They have also been reminded that their loyalty to the leader should not waver – even if they are on the verge of dying from hunger.

Around 3.5million people died between 1994 and 1998, during a famine that became known as the ‘Arduous March’.

It was given its name by the government, which had banned words such as ‘hunger’ and ‘famine’ because they implied criticism of the State.
