Those hand weights are probably 5 lbs. each, pretty light for that muscle set (I'd never done that particular exercise and just did 5 reps easily with 10 lb. hand weights). Also, the point of doing such exercises is strength and endurance. That means doing the lifts and the return to rest slowly, ~2 seconds in each direction.
