DUers what do think the code words/phrases being used against Obama to reinforce racial stereotypes?

I remember in the '80's they never wanted to give Black quarterbacks in the NFL their due so they use to call them "great athletes" which was a way to acknowledge their physical talent without acknowledging that they had any smarts the same way they would for white quarterbacks.

When I see Obama called elitist or arrogant I keep hearing "uppity negro."

1. yeah. Did they say reagan was "presumptuous" when he ran for prez?

I think not. he was "the great communicator".

6. "Presumptuous" is the new "Uppity."

I've been writing that a lot, today.

RW'ers are busy "deconstructing" his slavery apology speech from yesterday as we speak - I have already seen one headline designed to specifically separate and distance him further from white USAsians - "Obama Supports Slavery Reparations."

Disgusting.

4. You are right, when Barack who is trying to get a handle on the economic mess, is meeting with the economic teams he has assembled and others very knowledgeable, he is arrogant and presumptuous and already acting like he is President. But is he black enough? The media before was saying the people wanted someone new, someone outside the beltway, not the old politics. Barack has given them that, but now he is arrogant. Now, all we hear is the people do not know him, they need to get to know him. He needs to tell us who he is. Is he black enough?

He needed to look Presidential, needed to go to Iraq, Europe, he does this with no mistakes, he looks Presidential, then, the bar is raised again, will he get a poll bounce, did he go too far, acting presumptuous again, how dare he meet with the leaders before he is President, how dare he think about speaking at the Brandenburg Gate before he is President.

We constantly hear from the media, why is he only up 4 or 5 points. Well, the media never asks about their so called straight shooter who has been around for 25 to 30 years, why is he not in the lead, he is supposedly well known, Obama is not.

5. All of the following...

Arrogant
Presumptuous
Black Muslim (conjures up the image of militant blacks who want to "kill whitey")
Elitist

All these words are code for the "uppity negro" who has forgotten his place. No matter how successful. No matter how smart. No matter how confident. He will *always* be just another "black man" who isn't good enough. And every action has been scrutinized through and through while McSame is allowed to get away with the most outrageous lies!

The double standards were evident during the primaries with some of the most incendiary remarks from media pundits and even liberals here in DU and elsewhere who bought into that language. Latent racism was revealed during the primaries. My shock is that I thought racism was a Republican characteristic. I learned that I was so wrong. I'm beginning to witness more and more Republicans willing to vote for Obama while many Democrats nitpick at everything he does. It saddens me a great deal.

8. Grow the **** up and get over it.

That's code for "grow the **** up and get over it".

And by the way, how does a Columbia grad with a Harvard law degree, former editor of the Harvard law review and past law professor who speaks like an unabridged dictionarty avoid being called arrogant or elitist? So you are saying if he was white calling a man with such credentials elitist or arrogant would not be offensive but because he is only half white, the label equates to "uppity negro". Hmmmm- whose the racist in this scenario?

Americans have every right to belittle and critisize their president and political candidates. If you think this country is going to spend four years weighing words and phrases to defend against some sort of hidden meaning you are nuts. You are just making fence sitters uncomfortable with the candidate. He's a grown man, back off and quit trying to find ways to be insulted.

This is an obvious reference to my immigrant grandparents who were forced to work in the coal mines of Pennsylvania and wear carbide lamps on their heads to "enlighten" the shafts.

Calling me enlightened is the same thing as calling me a Pollock or a Kraut or a Mick!!! You are an obvious bigot. You are an immigrant hating bigot and xenophobe. You can't hide behind you code words. Your narrow minded intolerance is obvious!!!!!

(See how very stupid this thread is!!!)

9. When I hear him called a Muslim, I equate that with "scary black man", because the folks I hear talking about that lie are really afraid of a black man getting into office--calling him a Muslim shields them from being called racists. They'd deny this, of course. They would be glad to hire a black man as, say, a worker--to their minds, blacks have equal rights as long as they know their place. And to them, the Presidency is not that place.

19. Exactly. Obama surrogates need to be making that point...

...whenever the GOP or political "analysts" use the words "presumptuous," "arrogant," "exotic." That these words are simply code for "uppity n_______."

Sure, they'll argue it's not about his race, but his lack of experience. But let's take, say, John Edwards. He had fewer years as an elected official than Obama, but do you recall anyone ever referring to him as "presumptuous" for running for president?

Wow, the primitives sure have a lot of prejudices against blacks, half-blacks, educated blacks and Muslims! Why else would they be twisting themselves into little knots? When I think of Obama as elitist his color simply never entered my mind...what I see is an arrogant asshole looking down his nose at those in flyover country. If he really cared he wouldn't spew "guns and God, we're all hicks" stereotypes in an effort to score political points with the (mostly NOT black) elitist snobs in San Francisco. Usually people are called elitist because they think their shit doesn't stink and they're actually doing the world a favor by sharing said excrement with the rest of us.

I have no idea what the code word is........because whenever I'm in a room full of white liberals they usually just call them "******s".

Scratch a liberal, find a racist.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

I have never used nor heard the words "uppity negro" or "uppity" anything until I read stuff at DU.  I had also never heard the term "House N1993R" until I heard it used against Condi Rice and Colin Powell (also at DU).  Tell me again who the racists are?

BTW, if they're so damned worried about race, why do those ****ers throw Oreo cookies at our black leaders? Why do they call'em Uncle Toms? House Negroes? Sellouts?

Yes, this is rhetorical. It's all in the liberal mindset of victimization. People can't do it on their own, and when they do, they have to discount it. I swear, slavery STILL exists today and it's being pimped by the SAME damn party that did it in the 1800's, the f'n Democrats.

The first time I heard the phrase (or similar) was when Justice Thomas returned to the Senate to ask for his confirmation hearings to be extended to answer the accusations by Anita Hill.

He called the circus "a high tech lynching of an uppity black man".
That may not be the exact words,I didn`t look it up,but it was not in the context of lib speak.

It's funny, I grew up in the South. I often heard derogatory terms thrown around. But if you took a closer look, it was often either a flaming liberal or fellow minority hurling the words. There are racists in every group. But once you delve a little deeper, it's these idjits doing it. Or, pulling the same stunt that magazine did with the Obama cover. They project yet really just reveal their own minds.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle
