I caucused for Bernie in Nebraska today - astounding story
It was my first-ever caucus, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought Bernie would need all the help he could get against Hillary. Was I ever wrong!

People were getting up to speak on behalf of their candidates, and the speeches were all from Bernie supporters. I was inspired to stand up and speak, as well. Although I hadn't prepared to speak, my speech apparently went over well enough that I was invited to be a county delegate--something I regretfully had to turn down, because of health issues and urgent family commitments. Still, it was flattering to know that my impromptu speech had impressed my peers.

I live in a rural Nebraska county, and what astounded me was the difference between the Bernie and HRC supporters. Bernie's supporters were diverse--white, non-white, male and female, and every living generation of voting age (Silent, Boomers, Gen X'ers, Millennials). We even had a lifelong Republican switch parties, just to caucus for Bernie! The Hillary supporters were exclusively white Boomer women. No exceptions.

There was one undecided person, and it was up to the rest of us to convince him to go to one side or the other. All was going well, until a Hillary supporter dredged up the old "he's unelectable" excuse. I respectfully pointed out that independent voters win elections (since most Republicans and Democrats vote for their respective candidates), and Hillary's disapproval ratings are abysmal among independents.

Things had been going so well, that I was astounded by what happened next.

Another woman on the sparsely-populated Hillary side of the room began a long, rambling speech about her college days in the 1970's with a woman she's still friends with now. This had nothing whatsoever to do with this particular undecided voter's question, but we patiently listened anyway. This woman said that her friend had volunteered for Bernie, but later said that she would never vote for Bernie. Of course, we wondered why, and waited for her to elucidate.

To the shock of nearly every sane person in the room, she started saying that this friend of hers would never elaborate on why she had turned on Bernie, so there must be some horrible story about him. The speaker went into full concern-troll mode, saying that if Bernie were our nominee, the Republicans would dig up this oh-so-awful story and use it against him in the general election.

Which, of course, begs the question of how this "story" has never been dug up by any of the Republicans he's been running against since the 1970's!

I was just about to say as much, when someone simply muttered, "This is slander," and a lot of the Sanders supporters became upset by this tabloid-level rumormongering. Even the other Hillary supporters said nothing in defense of this woman's accusations...which, again, had nothing to do with the issues or the question the undecided voter had asked.

In the end, that particular voter joined the Sanders side.

I'm not naming the county where this took place because of certain 4chan trolls who have attacked one of my feminist DU posts on their board. However, I can give you the results of the caucus, rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent:

Bernie Sanders - 74.5%
Hillary Clinton - 25.5%

Yes he did. He didn't have some great career working for the 'man, he wasn't in politics, he was a nobody!

The guy was just like a 100 million of us. Is that really what we want as President? Someone who is so much like most Americans?

I call him "Saint" Bernard -- why?


* Because he wants to rescue America, just as these dogs used to run rescue missions

* Because he has a "dog"-ged determination to pursue justice (Ouch...I know!)

* Because the St. Bernard is a working dog, and Bernie supports the working poor and middle class

* Because these dogs are just awesome, and so is Bernie.

Seriously, Bernie Sanders is the first candidate I've been wholeheartedly excited about in a long time. He's someone whose record backs up what he says his views are, and has common-sense ideas like Medicare for all.

I'm looking forward to the debates, because I think he'll mop the floor with anyone he faces, in either party.

I am taking the strategic view.  I want Bernie to win the dem nomination.  Bern against Trump.  Might as well figure out if the country is more interested in free shit or if the country is more interested in electing a blowhard reality TV star.

At least with Bern V Trump it will be very entertaining.  It will be interesting to see what  skins is going to do if Bern does win.

I concur with your assessment of very entertaining.  Now as for what Skins might do, I think we can safely say Ms. Skins will be gainfully unemployed on a Hillary loss leaving him the sole bread winner in a very expensive area.  That probably means he will suck up to the Saint Blowhard supporters and begin the begging for cash threads.  Hillary folks will become as rare as hen's teeth at the dump (where real teeth are already in sort supply).
