It all depends on who i'm at the party with.  If i'm with good friends, no subject is taboo.  If i'm with relative strangers, I'll probably avoid fire starters like politices, religion, stuff like that.

I don't really like talking about politics or religion in real life. I do like learning about other people's religions though, but that is a different story.

Ptarmigan, what was your point and/or intent when you started this thread?

The last thing I wanted to do at a party is fight or fuss. So I had a few drinks, make that many drinks, listen to the music and dance.

It's easy to embarrass yourself at a party...

Let me tell you all about 'my' surgery................
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Depression and/or my alcoholic mother.

Two subjects that aren't pleasant when brought up.

Those aren't usually brought up though, cause I'm a happy drunk.   :-)

Yeah, I'd have to say if someone can get me on the topic of the disregard my folks had for me growing up, that usually puts me in a down mood. My grandfather--the topic makes me both happy(he was an incredible man) and sad(he left far too soon from my life--when I was 19--and I still needed him given the first topic that puts me in a funk).

As far as worldly stuff, when I'm with other adult women, I can't stand when all they talk about are their children and mommy stuff. I get bored...fast. Maybe it's because I'm immersed in 'mommy stuff' all day.

As far as the big stuff. I stay away from just about any topic with people inclined to turn it into a personal attack if engaged on something. A lot of wasted energy and it's just going to generate bad feelings in the end.

There are things you do not talk about at the dinner table. You know, politics, money, religion, and sex. This rule well applies at parties, weddings, etc. What is the touchiest and/or most depressing topic you can talk about at a party?

For me, they are:
World Trade Center/September 11, 2001
Natural Disasters, especially really bad ones like Hurricane Katrina or Tropical Cyclone Nargis
Joseph Stalin/Adolf Hitler
Carnies.....They creep me out! :-)...Clowns too..Oh and I will not discuss politics even with other conservatives! I have moonbat friends that will try to engage me in how horrible a president Bush is and I just smile and tell them to make sure they get out to vote in November! :-)
