Judge Forces Apple to Help Unlock San Bernardino Shooter iPhone

Source: NBC

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered Apple to give investigators access to encrypted data on the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters, assistance the computer giant "declined to provide voluntarily," according to court papers.

In a 40-page filing, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles argued that it needed Apple to help it find the password and access "relevant, critical … data" on the locked cellphone of Syed Farook, who with his wife Tashfeen Malik murdered 14 people in San Bernardino, California on December 2.

"Despite … a warrant authorizing the search," said prosecutors, "the government has been unable to complete the search because it cannot access the iPhone's encrypted content. Apple has the exclusive technical means which would assist the government in completing its search, but has declined to provide that assistance voluntarily."

Prosecutors said they needed Apple's help accessing the phone's data to find out who the shooters were communicating with and who may helped plan and carry out the massacre, as well as where they traveled prior to the incident.

...because according to DU, law enforcement has no right to root through an encrypted phone. I mean, law enforcement has no right to root through a MUSLIM'S iPhone. Since we haven't heard anything about Roof's phone, I'm guessing the uber-faggot liberals at Apple bent right over for that.

1. If I were Apple, there would be no way to open an encrypted iPhone.

That way I could say, "Sorry judge, we just do not have that capability. And knowing the algorithm does not help."

...unless it's a "right wing terrorist," in which case, no problem, right?

11. Good for Apple. It's time for a public stand against the police state. nt

...said the DUmbass, NOT about Dylann Roof.

12. Apple just came out saying they won't put in back doors!

Oddly enough, Tim Cook puts just about anything in his back door.

...and finally, look how DU is suddenly pro-capitalist, pro-corporate interests:

15. Well

The new technology Apple would need to create would also have the effect of doing irrevocable damage to their iOS line of products. Their encryption and security is one of the selling points, and they'd be open to lawsuits from millions of customers who sometimes spent around $1000 for their devices. It's also fairly short-sighted on the government's part because Apple is quickly replacing Blackberry in government agencies, and once this technology is created it's only a matter of time before it ends up in the wrong hands.

Even dumb phones keep track of where you are. Phones ping towers as you move around. If you want to be free of ex post tracking, don't carry a phone at all.

I'm recognizing DU names now that I've been introduced to that rediculous place....I've seen Little Tich in the Israeli/palestinian forum.  If you're reading this, I'd say you might be an anti semite.....but who knows...... I could be wrong.....with that said.... the way I understand this phone situation, all the hoops the feds have had to jump through might be an indication of how are civil liberties are actually protected.....

Doesn't matter though.....the left hates protecting civil liberties unless it benefits them.  They'd have us all thrown in jail for our opinions if they could.

I dunno. I kind of side with Apple on this. I don't own any of their crap, but the idea of the government forcing a company to produce something that doesn't currently exist is just wrong.

Plus, if they are going to demand this from Apple, it basically means their encryption is useless from now on from the consumer's point of view.

That would be a big selling point for Apple competitors if they concede to the government's wishes. Other companies could then claim that their phones still don't have a backdoor.

Should the government force all hardware/software makers to give them a backdoor to level the playing field?

OTOH, I just don't trust the feds regardless of who is in power not to misuse this.

Berbie Sanders would say 'yes'

He and DU folk would say, "Yes!" if a D is POTUS, and scream, "Fascism!" if an R is POTUS. And both successively according to that circumstance, as we may see come early next year.
If The Vaccine is deadly as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, millions now living would have died.
