Can we start from K-12 because that basic education seems to be no longer free?

The bus is no longer free.
School supplies are no longer free.
Gym clothes were never free.
Field trips are no longer free.
Breakfast and Lunch is not free for many.
School uniforms or dress codes are not free.
Extra curricular activities like Drama, Speech, Sports, Cheer are not free.
Now some schools are charging fees for classes.

Many parents whose kids are enrolled in private schools would echo that sentiment. As would many who homeschool their kids (we did, K-12). And contrary to stereotypes, they/we are far from rich, monetarily at least.

You know if teachers really cared about teaching children wouldn't they do it for free?
You know if school administrators really cared about teaching children wouldn't they do it for free?

Then education could be free.
But they don't they want to be paid for their time and rightly so.

They want free secondary schools, free college tuition, free prescription drugs, free healthcare, and huge pay increases for unskilled labor.

At the same time, they (and the repuke frontrunners) want to attack the banking system, big corporations, and the American political system because
they're all part of the hated "establishment".

That should work.

I grew up a child of the 70's (graduated high school in '79) and I don't remember any of that stuff being free. If a field trip was to something other than the downtown library or the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra then my parents paid for it. Lunches where never free unless you were a poor kid and had a pass. My parents bought my supplies and pretty much everything else on that list. I'm not sure what the OP is talking about but either he/she can from some alternate reality US or they don't remember things as they actually were.

Same here. The only free field trips were to factories, the state museum or the state capitol.

#3 -  They assumed it was all free because, Momsy and Dadsy paid for everything and they were never taught how that money tree works.  Then, they experienced reality and were unable to cope.

H5!!  I wouldn't even mind paying if I got a product worth paying for.

Example A:  (conservative bouncy alert)   
Went to the local mikey D's about a year ago.  The bill was $5.02 or something like that.   I handed the cute little thing that looked about 14 behind the register a 5 and two cents. Handed me back $45.00 and 18 cents and walked away.  She fat fingered it in as $50.20 I assume.  I called her back and told her about it and I got a blank look. Tried to explain, nada. Finally had to get the manager on duty, who looked about 20, explained it to him.

Now here is where it gets good. He said he could not do anything about it unless he counted out the drawer.  What?  I could understand if I was wanting money... I was trying to give it back to them!!!!

Long story short, I gave the money to the manager and told him when the drawer come back $45 short this was the reason why. He then gave me a form to fill out disputing the money I got back.  Told me he would have to count the drawer out.  WTF?

This is what my damned property taxes are going for?

Yeah. And it seems like quality of the educational service has gone way way down. We used to have quality. It seems like now we have more quantity. Costs have gone way way up, but it seems like the kids who are doing more work. First graders are getting regular homework these days.

My wife regularly comments on the complexity of our daughter's homework, saying that we never had homework this tough at that age (3rd grade).  She's probably correct.  I really don't remember what we had for homework back then.

Yes, my parents paid for our school supplies and field trips, etc...but I really resent being asked to supply a box of baby wipes (my kids are in high school!), 6 boxes of kleenex, a large container of germex, and dry erase markers.

That's what the DUmmies tell us THEY were thinking about when they were in the 3rd grade.

Same here and I'll even go a bit further, I want all schools to be private and paid for by parents.

Honestly there are a bunch of kids that just do not belong in school and need to learn to dig ditches the right way.
