During the course of his higher education and subsequent career, Mr. Pitt has lived and worked professionally for extended periods over many years in Birmingham, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The focus of his practice in Alabama consequently extends to many and varied regions of our state, and his deep commitment to clients in need of solid legal representation in all walks of life, in both civil and criminal matters, in court, in dealing with government agencies, and in private legal counseling, is his lifework.
Mr. Pitt received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama College of Arts & Sciences, with majors in American Studies and Political Science, a minor in English, and an equivalent major in History, while participating in service activities both at the University and in communities around the state. At the University he held membership in several scholastic and leadership honor societies. Mr. Pitt received his law degree from Boston College Law School, and was admitted under the student practice rule to appear in the courts of Massachusetts while working in the Office of the Attorney General of Massachusetts.
Prior to attending law school Mr. Pitt was employed as a staff assistant to Congressman John Young of Texas, as well as by the Democratic National Committee, and worked in numerous local, state and national campaigns both in Alabama and in select locations across the United States.
Mr. Pitt entered military service prior to entering law school. Following graduation from law school, he worked as a staff Assistant to the Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance corporation, and to the Comptroller of the Currency, United States Treasury Department, in Washington D.C.
Mr. Pitt returned home and began a 31 year law practice in Alabama in 1981. He served as an Assistant Attorney General in Montgomery from 1981 to 1987, and from 1991-1992, specializing in both civil and criminal matters. He served as Chief Deputy Attorney of Alabama from 1987 – 1991, and from 1992-1994. In 1994 Redding Pitt was nominated by President Bill Clinton and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate to serve as United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, based in Montgomery, and served as United States Attorney from 1994-2001. In 2001, Mr. Pitt entered the private practice of law with Farris, Riley & Pitt, where he continues to dedicate himself to the vital needs of clients.
In addition to the listed practice areas which are the firm’s special areas of expertise, Mr. Pitt, drawing on his extensive experience as a prosecutor and lawyer in public service, represents clients in need of representation in criminal matters, in state and federal courts. Importantly, Mr. Pitt brings from his experience strong expertise in representing persons who face investigative challenges, particularly during the grand jury phase of cases, and has achieved substantial positive results for many clients in this area. Mr. Pitt’s practice also includes representing aggrieved clients as plaintiffs in civil fraud cases, and he has served as special master in complex litigation. In all these practice areas Redding Pitt has consistently maintained a central commitment, putting the client and his or her life’s interest, and that of their families first, always.
Mr. Pitt served as Chairman of the State Democratic Executive Committee of Alabama, and as a member of the Democratic National Committee from 2001-2005, and was elected Chairman of the Alabama delegation to the Democratic National Convention in 2004.
Redding Pitt served as a United States Army officer on active duty from 1969 to 1972, which service included a year’s duty in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. [Although I cannot find any official reference to the award of the Bronze Star Medal anywhere. Pitt had to have been in ROTC which is also not mentioned.]EDUCATION
