I haven't watched one in about 15 years, and I caught part of the beginning ceremonies, and I'm frankly horrified.

I've been muttering for years that if a foreign power wanted to invade us, they'd do it during a Superbowl. A patient enemy would wait for the Washington Redskins (or whatever name they may have in the future)to be in, because the entire District of Columbia is totally shut down when they play -- I know from experience. And if the 'Skins were to win, it would be March, at least, before anyone would notice.

Seriously.

Oh, and there is a bit of sarcasm but mostly hyperbole in this post.

DC might shut down when the Redskins play, but most of the rest of the country continues with business as usual, as if football isn't even being played, mostly because it isn't being played by washington.

The Superbowl is an event where:



There are winners and losers.

Patriotism is high.

The winners get a trophy saying that they won.

Individual accolades are given to the best performers.

Coaches look at those that aren't performing, already thinking about who is going to get replaced next season.

Those who perform are in some cases, looking at pressing for better compensation for their performances.

Players and coaches make nice huge salaries.

Newer players get to demonstrate their individual talent.





In short, the superbowl represents everything they hate.

Since "The Star Spangled Banner" has been sung at sporting events longer than I've been alive, I assume their particular cause-of-butt-hurt in this case was the flyover by the Blue Angels. I didn't watch it, but saw them flying into the former Moffett NAS the day before ... in formation. The F-18 is a graceful looking bird.
