Melissa Harris-Perry Narrowly Escapes An Attack During Iowa Caucuses
 
Melissa Harris-Perry has a rather harrowing tale to tell about a terrible experience at the Iowa caucuses. Rather than paraphrasing it, I'll let her words speak for themselves.

 Monday night I was sitting in a hotel lobby in downtown Des Moines with my back to a wall of windows, my eyes fixed on the TV, my attention wholly focused on early caucus results. I didn’t notice until he was standing right next to me, much closer than is ordinary or comfortable. When he started he speaking it was like he was picking up in the middle of sentence, finishing a conversation we had begun earlier, but I couldn’t remember ever meeting him.

“…So what is it that you teach?”

 â€œI am a professor of political science.”

 â€œMy wife is a professor of communications.”

 â€œDoes she teach here in Iowa?”

 â€œWhat I want to know is how you got credentialed to be on MSNBC.”

I am not sure if it is how he spat the word credentialed, or if it is how he took another half step toward me, or if it is how he didn’t respond to my question, but the hairs on my arm stood on end. I ignored it. Told myself everything was ok.

“Well. It is not exactly a credential…” I began.

“But why you? Why would they pick you?”

Now I know something is wrong. Now his voice is angry. Now a few other people have stopped talking and started staring. Now he is so close I can feel his breath. Before I can answer his unanswerable question of why they picked me, he begins to tell me why he has picked me.

Now this is how you do it DUmmies.  Story is incredibly vague, but at the same time has direct quotes from the conversation.  Conversation starts with the word "So".  Bouncy teller is saved from evil bad Rethug by group of student extolling the virtues of democracy at just the right moment.  Rent-A-Cop in bushes ignore the obvious threat to her life.  The only thing missing is a conversion.  If she talked the ruthless attacker into voting for the Dem, she would have a chance for a perfect score.

This tale is so pathetic even the DUmmies have trouble believing it.

She claims she was sitting with her back to a wall of windows.  To me this implies that her "attacker" could not have snuck up from behind her which is how most attacks would begin.  Also her being in a hotel lobby which implies a public area is not a very believable place for an attack of this nature to take place  When he started he speaking it was like he was picking up in the middle of sentence, finishing a conversation we had begun earlier, but I couldn’t remember ever meeting him.

Before I can answer his unanswerable question of why they picked me, he begins to tell me why he has picked me.

My comments are in red as to why I believe this tale is pure unmitigated bullshit.  She paints a picture that she was singled out by a person who she paints to be unhinged, yet there are inconsistencies as to the logistics of how this happened, not to mention it happened in a hotel lobby in front of witnesses.

One last question I have, if she is such a shit hot "reporter" for messnbc, why was she watching the caucus results from a lobby in a hotel in Iowa and not at the messnbc  broadcast location in Iowa?  Why would she travel all the way to Iowa to watch the results on a TV in a hotel lobby when she could watch them from the safety of her own home?

We should care, because credibility is the only currency that matters in politics. The less credibility she has, the less shes able to engage in political warfare against your life, liberty, property, and beliefs.

Des Moines is not a huge city proper, about 200k.  Metro area is 500k.  The downtown area is rather concentrated, but very VERY nice.  Almost all classy hotels.

If this bouncy were actually true, wouldn't it have made the media by now?  Nothing in the DM Register, which leans way left.

and this was in there, if you can believe it  :

"I freeze. Not even me – the girl in me. The one who was held down by an adult neighbor and as he raped her. The one who listened as he explained why he was doing this. She freezes."

Again, the man never touched her. An awkward, verbal exchange in a crowded hotel lobby seems a long way from rape. But Harris-Perry isn’t done:

"I freeze. He speaks. And moves closer. Is there a knife under the coat? A gun? Worse? And I can’t hear all the words. But I catch “Nazi Germany” and I catch “rise to power.” But I can’t move. I am lulled by a familiar powerlessness, muteness, that comes powerfully and unexpectedly. It grips me. Everything is falling away."

There’s really no context for these quotes. How did the conversation get from “I just want you to know why I am doing this” to Nazi Germany? We’re left to wonder and, as readers, we’re left with the idea that this person must have launched into a crazy fascist rant of some kind.
