The Boomer generation was exposed to Opera through the WB cartoons, which referred to music the Greatest Generation knew.  If you want to know how Dumbed Down we are, watch a real silent moie from the 1909-1930 era.  The implied references of what shoud be understood are astounding.  The simple implications the audience understood such references are unbelievable.

The more sophisticated (or at least complex) rock music also used classical music, especially opera, to why it has staying power.

Today's kids have no such references: What, "Dexter's Lab" does Bach? "Spongebob Opus?"  Nope -- music is all but lost and the Boomers, who could have continued it, have instead allowed the "Jay-walking" generations (now at least two and maybe three), to get away thinking 2Pac's stealing of Queen is somehow original.

*sigh* -- it is true -- the future generations will have it worse than we did, for the first time in recorded history.

I hope Mussorgsky's family at least got some royalties from Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck.

Back when they understood the meaning of Public Domain didn't mean "the endless generations of progeny from the inventor," the music (material) in these classics entered exactly that.
