Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard. - H.L. Mencken
High five for HL Mencken!
I was riding through Mississippi a few years ago, and stopped at a roadhouse on the edge of Jackson. The morning shift lot lizard eyed me like a hungry dog as I walked in. At the counter, customers washed down their breakfast with beer from dirty glasses. Cigarette smoke filled the room.
The waitress took a drag on a Kool, and then took my order- chicken fried steak and pepper gravy, eggs, grits and coffee.
She asked me how I take my coffee. I said, "I like my coffee the way I like my women".
"Black?" she asked. A couple of other customers looked over at us.
"No, ma'am. Bitter and cold, with a cigarette butt stuck in it."
She laughed, a wheezy kind of laugh that ended with a cough.
She kept that coffee cup full and offered me one to go. I rode off with a full belly, a good cigar clamped between my teeth, and a smile.
