Last week one evening we were at my son's place where my sister-in-law was visiting. My wife and I were there, my son and his lady as well as their child, and my son's two daughters from an earlier relationship. We sat down to a really nice dinner when SIL says "Anyone mind if I say Grace?" I said "Yes!"

My wife, son and I are all athiests, my son's lady (born and raised in India) is Hindu, and the children have been kept as far away from Christianity as my powers have allowed. I thought it was an insult to everyone there for her to babble christian nonsense over the food and said so.

Right or wrong?

You know, the mountain man primitive is a hard-core hard-line Kennedy sentimentalist, the strongest of a dying breed.

I'll bet if the sister-in-law offered to pray to John the Father, Bobby the Christ, and Vast Teddy the Holy Spirit, that would've been okay with the "athiest" mountain man primitive.

Babbling christian nonsense hurts the taste of food. Or something. Or the 10 seconds it would take to be thankful to whomever for whatever is just too long to wait to tuck in.

But since the original poster is specifically asking if he did "wrong," I'm really not sure what sort of answer he's fishing for - absolution or condemnation, either of which would be equally meaningful. Or meaningless. What does "wrong" mean? According to whose standard? Is there an absolute measure of "right" and "wrong" that we can all agree on?

It's a very large primitive bonfire, but doesn't go anywhere fast.

She asked permission to practice her own religious belief in her own home, over the meal that she undoubtedly prepaired for them, and they get pissed.

What was that about someone saying people needed to tolerate others religious choices?   :whatever:

I find it very dishonest when they claim they are being sensitive and tolerant while being anything but to the person in question they post about at the time and then they have the audacity to do it under the guise of tolerance for some mythical oppressed person in the room.  :whatever: I often wonder if any of them of the self-introspection to even feel a little 'off' when they do that.

You know, after thinking about this, I've probably eaten half my meals in my lifetime without saying 'grace' over them. But after this crude behavior even I would pitch a fit.

Next time they visited, I'd tell'em, "You heathens can go out in the backyard while we return thanks." .....and as I get older, I wouldn't put it past me to do it. I certainly ain't as tolerant as I used to be.

These people and their (in)tolerance piss me off to no end.  I can't count the number of blessings, and prayers, and the like that I've sat through over the last decade.  And I can say without a doubt that I've never held a malicious thought towards those giving or receiving the blessing.  

Someone praying for me is not treading on my choice to be an Atheist.  Someone asking for the blessing of our food is in no way harming me, or forcing me to accept their views.

These people are the worst of hypocrites.  They demand "tolerance" to their beliefs, and at the same time castigate anyone who wishes to practice their beliefs.  In the end no one is helped, and people like me are "hurt" because of the reputation these ass hats bring to all Atheists.

You know, this still intrigues me.

Why can't alleged atheists ever spell the word correctly?

On Skins's island, they seem to get it spelled correctly only about a third of the time.

There was some kid, Matt12 or something like that, at our old home who boasted in his "signature line' about his being an "athiest."  Since he was on our side, I always thought about sending him a personal message gently and constructively pointing out the error, but I just never got around to it.

To make sure I didn't misread, this idiot was a guest at someone elses house for dinner, and when one of the homeowners asked if it was okay to say grace before the meal, this 'tard breaks out the offended card ?

I wont even use the bathroom at a home belonging to someone else without asking first.

I agree.  Haven't consulted Ms. Manners on this, but I would take it that it's up to the person whose home it is to determine whether they pray or not.  SIL should have asked in private if she could say a prayer, DUmmie ThomWV shouldn't answer when it's not his home regardless of how SIL worded the question.

Why should she have to ask in private? These aren't a group of strangers, they're family. Had the HOST not wanted an open declaration of thanks to his aunt's deity he could've said anything from "I'm sorry, we're just not comfortable with that" to "By all means, but please do so silently" to "While we're not believers, we'd be happy to share grace with you". Thommy-boy showed a complete lack of class, it wasn't his place to usurp the role of the host, even if it's his own son. Being that he's also family he could've said "Personally, I'm not comfortable with that" and then left it up to his son to decide.Tolerance is a one way street for some people.

I would do it out of courtesy to the host regardless if they're family or not if I believed there might be objections or it would cause a stir, which apparently she did or she wouldn't have asked.  Otherwise, we're in agreement.
