On getting on candidates email lists...
I have read some ludicrous things here, (that should be in GD-P anyway), but it is time to explain something. It is ridiculous that this has to be explained on a political website, with people who claim to be party activist but sure, why not? Obviously people do not know this.

In 2004 I gave money to Governor Dean. In 2008 I gave money to Obama. In 2012 I started getting emails from oh one Congresswoman Michelle Bachman. Now explain, any of you please how the hell did I start to get emails from her? We are not even close geographically. Oh the ones from Huckabee and Mitt Romney were just lovely too. I am missing this year some love from Huckabee, they were comedy gold.

I have never given any money to a Republican... so I will ask you again, how the hell did I get into those lists?

This year I am getting emails from the Sanders Campaign and the Clinton Campaign. Governor O'Malley I am feeling quite left out here... I have yet to give to either campaign. In fact, I don't intend to. I am also getting emails from the Markey campaign and some Vera or another running for Reid's seat in Nevada. Ok at least Nevada shares a border with California... go figure.

Here is what happened. Campaigns, whoever they are, gather your names when you donate. Then these lits are sold and bought and that is how you end up in lists that you never showed any interest in. Is it kosher, nope, but it happens too often. It is like donating to charity and getting requests from another 20 charities next.

Hell, I am in the list for several local pols running for the State Assembly and local city council seats, and we have not given one red cent to any of these campaigns. (At least those make a tad more sense) We get them... it happens.

Now the one that broke all kinds of rules was the money begging love letter with a news release from the Bachman campaign. Now that is a no-no.. your media list shall never be conflated or confused with your donor list, or your volunteer list. The last two sort of can. That is like an FEC and Ethics violation from hell.

But if any of you ends up in email lists from pols you really have no interest, if you have donated in the last 10 years, you will. And if you have any interest, well it's a good investment on their part. As media we simply do not sign petitions, or give money to any campaign. It is just the way it is. So yes, my last time I gave any money was in 2008. I am hoping that by 2020 I stop getting any of this crap... though it can be rather entertaining. Hey, I just loved the RNC and DNC surveys showing in the mail the same day this year. They went straight to the shredder. So I know our name, and address, has been bought and sold a few times.

And I still treasure (ok the conures loved shredding it) the photos of George. The ones from Obama made sense, we gave money to his campaign. The ones from Dubya made like zero sense.

Mr Moskwa is vacationing on the tens of thousands he gets from the DUmps emails.

Use of Information Collected from Registered Users

Basically it means that if you want to post at DU, you agree that your personal information may used in any manner that Skinner can find to make a profit.  Such as selling your contact information to the DNC , Hillary 2016 or to the FBI and DHS.

Here is something I've done for years that helps me track how my name and email address gets distributed. Whenever I sign up for something and give my email address, when it asks for my name I use a different middle initial each time. I make note of it in a spread sheet and when I start getting email from unknown sources I can't look at the middle initial of the greeting if it is present and then I can tell who started the process. You'd be amazed by how many sites say they don't distribute your address but in fact do.
