Is it just me?
« on: November 23, 2015, 09:50:05 AM »
I was thinking about the Top DUmmies awards coming around again, and it occured to me that this year seems...different. The DUmmies this year, both individually and as a hive of insects, do not seem...equal...to the DUmmies that came before them, in both quantity and 'quality'.

Doug Bulna has not resurfaced in any meaningful or even literal way. PHDD, in spite of being incapable of shutting her pie-hole, has been uncharacteristically quiet. Besides a recent sighting, the cousin has been mostly absent. The pitt-drunkard primitive has been mostly absent, curled up and warm in his bottle no doubt. The loud gun grabbing loons seem to be down to a skeleton crew. The gay mafia has been quiet compared to previous years. The Klams have even been quieter than normal. And at the DUmp, as a whole, traffic seems way down. Activity seems way down. The poisoned tree that is skins island, seems to have lost its fruit to an extent I've not seen before. They seem diminished in about every way that matters.

We of course have no way of knowing how much traffic Skins's island gets, but I suspect it's down for this year, as compared with previous years, which might, or might not, account for the lowered comedic quality of the primitives.

And it's going to be a lot less populated on the ole Isle once skinner purges the Bernie-bots.

I don't visit DU very often.
But based on what is brought over here, the DUmmies are just phoning it in.
They're just going through the motions.
They just aren't giving us their best panicky crisis style efforts.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

I'm definitely voting for Bravenak, either because it would be racist not to, or it will be racist to. Either way, it is an obligation.

I'm not necessarily voting for Bravenak herself but for the sum total of her effect on the Island which has been one of the better performances this year.

I'm also voting for Omaha Steve because, say what you will about his other achievements in this life, the man knows how to prolong a death scene. Best performance since Vincent Price in Theater of Blood.

I agree, both of these are high on my list.  I wish Nadine would make a comeback as this will be the first year I am voting and I just feel like at some point in the future I will be able to sit back and be proud of the fact I voted for her.
Not so gay Randy has had some good ones, but still behind the big guy (who is dying) Big Mo, some decent stuff from her, but again doubt any of it is worth a certificate suitable for framing.

Also, I think it depends on how you view the DUmp.  I believe Frank did a survey maybe a couple of years ago asking how each member typically viewed the dump.  Personally, I am more concerned with studying the anthropological side of the DUmp, and viewing the primitives as as separate species from normal folk.

It's a lot like the zoo.  Some of us come to see the gorillas, while others are busy watching the monkeys on monkey island, or the birds.

It's fun to follow them through life, too.  Take Grasswipe Judy for example.  She's been a vagrant living in a bodega by the train tracks with delusions of starting a pie "shoppe", a flea market "picker", a person of high order viking ancestry, all the while belonging to a family that multiplies like rabbits.

The latest thing she has been up to is pestering all of the kiddies she finds wandering the halls in the nursing home she is confined to so they can run all of her stale food through an old meat grinder.

I was thinking about the Top DUmmies awards coming around again, and it occured to me that this year seems...different.

Every year it's "different," and I am truly surprised how many times it looked as if a year's crop of primitives was going to be a dud, and then somehow at the last minute--or close to the last minute--something happens, and the crop comes forth a barn-buster.

The Top DUmmies have been around since December 2005, but I'm more familiar with those years I wrote the awards, 2009-2014.

I will say the first year of the awards, when Dysfunctional American carried top honors, was a gut-wrenching disappointment.  I'm sure even God agreed that poor stupid Beth, then known as "sfexpat2000," was clearly the Top DUmmie because of her antics during the Scamdal earlier in the year, but there were enough sour-assed old grouches at our old home who were "tired" of the late red round one--bored to death with it, didn't like it at all, thought it made us look bad--to nudge the vote for this less-worthy candidate.

The first year I wrote the awards, 2009, the top five were interesting and exciting--the top winner being Pamela, then the greenbriar primitive--but the lower-ranking ones pretty mediocre.  That was the year--the exact date being December 17, 2009, at 3:30 a.m. (it's one of those things one never forgets)--Tangerine LaBamba, disillusioned with Skins's island and wishing to make a death-bed (really; she died a few days later) confession so as to cleanse her soul, came over here to unburden, to spill the beans on the primitives.  Right on franksolich's lap.

<<<still considers that one of the luckiest breaks ever received in life.

The second year, 2010, was noted by my writing what I considered the very best award ever given a Top DUmmie, the sparkling old dude.  It's true he lost out to Anne, the wretched miserable old bitch the dysmenopausal Kansas school teacher, coming in second, but I really enjoyed writing that particular award.

For those who don't know, the sparkling old dude's in the food-service consulting business, with a couple of partners.  I'm sure that his partners, after seeing this award, printed off hundreds, of not thousands, of copies of it, to include with their other materials promoting their company, to show how well-connected they are.

The year 2011 was again the same; the top five were brilliant choices, but the following fifteen, pretty boring.

The election year 2012 was a bitch, providing perhaps the most controversial winner yet.

Never mind; there's still disagreement because the winner was a mole, not a bona fide primitive, but being the one who made the rules, I was okay with that.  It's something that's always sort of likely to happen--we don't know all the moles, all the legits--and the people had spoken.  Even though a false primitive, the people had spoken, and were heeded.

The years 2013 and 2014 featured, as winners, one-event primitives--but an event so large, so astounding, so stupendous, so magnificent, that it rolled over the primitives who'd worked so hard all year long and perhaps deserved to win because of their hard work and earnest efforts.

Everybody's criteria for top primitive is different; some judge primitives by what they do all year long, others by the spectacularness of some deed they do, even if only one deed all year long.

DOTY is a magical season as the primitives maneuver and elbow each other for higher honors.
Quite often we will get a visit from one in a desperate attempt to skew the voting.

It really is there only chance in life for some sort of recognition rather then just looks of pitiful scorn. :hyper:

They've become bogged down in internecine sniveling about identity politics (I.e., although all the gender, orientation, racial, economic, 'Abilitied,' fat, skinny, old, ethnic victim groups are equal, which one is MORE equal?) and lukewarm slapfights between the Hitlerites err 'Hillaryites' and the Trotskyites.  At teh same time, Skinner and his triad, along with his network of Blockleiters and Volksgerichte, have been fairly successful at preserving a semblance of party unity by suppressing the Hell out of any original or even mildly-dissenting thought.

The result has been a rather dull year for DU, I'm afraid.  Everyone who might have livened things up a bit has been timed out or banned, rather than being allowed to blossom to his, her, or its full potential.
