John Bel Edwards becomes Louisiana's next governor

John Bel Edwards beats David Vitter to become Louisiana's next governor

State Rep. John Bel Edwards, a relatively unknown Democrat from a rural Amite, will be the state's next governor after toppling Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., in one of the biggest political upsets in the state's history.

Edwards election day efforts focused on New Orleans. He met up with U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond in the afternoon at Spears & Spears law firm in St. Roch to make phone calls and send encouraging texts to supporters. Several people in "John Bel Edwards for Governor" T-shirts could also be seen boarding a school bus outside the law firm's building, presumably help the Democrat turn out the vote in other parts of the city.

An Edwards administration is expected to be a marked shift from Gov. Bobby Jindal's approach to public policy over the past eight years. The Democrat is expected to bring Medicaid expansion to Louisiana shortly after taking office, meaning thousands of more Louisiana residents could have access to health insurance in a couple of months. Teachers unions and other organized labor groups will also have more of a voice with Edwards than they ever had with Jindal.

Wow.  Not a good sign for the GOP.  Not a good sign at all considering that Jindal just dropped out of the presidential race.
I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

Vitter ran a lousy campaign and his fellow Repub. lawmakers did not support him including Gov. Jindal.  Edwards is squeaky clean where the D. successfully painted Vitter as a dirty politician.

The R. LT. Governor swamped his D. opponent, and the incumbent Attorney G. was ousted by another R.  The Repubs have a majority in the legislature. However, taxes are going  up as Jindal has mismanaged the budget with a 1.3 billion dollar shortfall.  Going to be a long 4 years.

Yes.

Also, it is not uncommon for a candidate to have the most votes in the general election but less than 50% in a crowded field, and then lose to the candidate who came in second in a special/second election. Vitter's chances were hurt by the present Governor, Jindal, whose poll numbers are in the tank.

John Edwards is squeaky clean ?
The same John Edwards who ran for president ?
That guy is about as dirty as the worst politicians I have ever seen.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Two totally different folks...

libertybele... I don't consider this a big deal at all... Jindal was very unpopular in Louisiana right now, and this was more or less expected.  I'm surprised he stayed in the Presidential race as long as he did.

You have Edwards and Jindal mixed up. Edwards graduated from West Point and was an Army Ranger. Many Repubs voters voted for Edwards. Hopefully, Jindal and Vitter get out of politics.

I thought he mixed up his "John Edwards"... He said the one who ran for President, I thought he meant this John Edwards... I agree w/ you about Jindal at this point, and I know little to nothing about Vitter.
