I believe it was Walter Williams who observed,
If a person in the US is even born into poverty, all they have to do is stay in school and get a high school education.
Don't get pregnant, and don't get anyone pregnant.
Get married, each get a minimum wage job.
Work a minimum of a 40 hour workweek each.
You will live considerably above the poverty line.
Watch your expenses and you will even be able to save money.
Be reliable, and learn your trade and you will earn your way into the middle class.
But if you are the one who takes payday loans,
Rents all your furniture and home electronics at rent a center,
Buys a car at a finance everyone on the lot car lot
Buys lottery tickets
Gets tattoos
Drinks excessively
Indulges in illicit drugs
Buys piercings and other "body art"
Buys excessive "bling" dentistry and jewelry
Buys custom rims and other accessories that add zero value
Smokes cigarettes
Eats obsessively and compulsively
Maxes out all your credit cards and only pays minimum balances if that
Then you are a person who will not stay in the middle class.
Much if not all a person does while in the middle class determines if they stay there or move up into the upper or down into the lower economic classes.
There is a benefit to discipline.
There is a price to be paid for sloth, indolence and garishness.
