I am only 'bumping' this because I found a very interesting article on the Professor that I hadn't seen before I posted the other.

What's at stake[/U]

(1) The right of university professors of any faith or political perspective to express their views without facing retaliation from government officials.

(2) The right of conservatives and Christians to serve as university professors without experiencing discrimination and retaliation for expressing their views and beliefs.

(3) The right of conservative and Christian university professors to receive a fair evaluation, without being punished or passed over because they express opinions that university officials do not like.


When Dr. Adams arrived at UNCW in 1993, he was a liberal atheist.

In 2000, Dr. Adams became a Christian, and his conversion impacted his political views.

When Dr. Adams applied for promotion to full professor in 2006, he had no idea he was about to embark upon a constitutional adventure that would last more than seven years. Given his record of accomplishment as a teacher, scholar, and community servant, he had little reason to be concerned about his prospects. But when he was denied promotion, he would gradually expose the depths of animosity towards Christians and conservatives at UNC-Wilmington.

In April, the district court ruled that UNCW must promote Dr. Adams to full professor and pay him $50,000 in back pay. In May, UNCW appealed the jury verdict and the court’s ruling. In June, the district court ordered UNCW to pay Dr. Adams’ attorneys’ fees.

FWIW, it appears that the page you linked may be a year old. not that that contradicts or changes anything about the info. Quoting further, to give a flavor of UNC's shenanigans:

Even so, when Dr. Adams applied for promotion in 2006, he was confident in his record of achievement.  He had out-published all but two of his colleagues, and professors with far fewer than his eleven scholarly publications had previously been promoted.  His teaching awards and above-average student evaluations testified to his teaching prowess, and his service record—both on and off campus—was clear.

To UNCW officials, however, this was not enough.  They denied Dr. Adams this promotion in a process replete with violated policies, manipulation, deception, and conflicts of interest.  They applied a made-up promotion standard that flatly contradicted the faculty handbook.  They passed along false information about his academic record, and they deceptively edited documents to turn the faculty vote against Dr. Adams.  Later, they openly and repeatedly discussed Dr. Adams’ columns, holding his views against him and even mocking him for them.  They allowed the professor who filed false felony charges against him to participate in the promotion process, an outrageous conflict of interest.  And after all this, they tried to cover up their illegal actions by giving different explanations for their decision, ultimately claiming that Dr. Adams failed in every area of evaluation.

If Dr. Adams loses this case public university campuses will quickly become open-season hunting grounds to get Christians and conservatives, generally, out of faculties. Purging open Christians from student bodies would be a natural step beyond that, though $$ and adminicratic cupidity might be an obstacle to such a purge.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Criminology professor Dr. Mike Adams’ seven-year quest to vindicate his First Amendment freedoms concluded with a settlement in his favor Tuesday. In March, a federal jury ruled that the University of North Carolina–Wilmington illegally retaliated against Adams when it denied him a promotion in 2006 because of his conservative views.

As part of the settlement in Adams v. The Trustees of the University of North Carolina–Wilmington, the university agreed to drop its appeal of a federal district court’s decision in Adams’ favor. The university also agreed to promote Adams to the position of full professor and pay him $50,000 in back pay as the court ordered, to adopt procedures protecting Adams from renewed retaliation, and to pay $615,000 in attorneys’ fees.

So Professor Adams won: he was promoted to full Professor; $50K in back pay; his attorney fees were paid by UNC-W.

That's a great result, but let's not kid ourselves -- UNCW and the rest of the liberal shitholes that continue to spawn statists, communists, socialists, and the rest of the anti-American sentiment commonly found on campuses won't learn from their mistake. They'll find another right to trample.

Not kidding myself, here.

CA passed Prop 13 in (IIRC) 1978. Libs and Progs are still chipping away at it.

CA passed Prop 209 (outlawing "Affirmative Action" in government decisions like college admissions and contract awards) in 1996. The UC system has gotten nailed in court for trying to evade it, multiple times.

I suspect that if I had just a tenth of the taxpayer $$ wasted on attempts to evade just these two laws, and on defending those evasions in court, I could retire very comfortably!

The fact that the Prof in question was atheist when he came to the school, and was converted to Christianity should strike fear into the hordes of libs in academia.

His attorney fees were paid for by the taxpayers of NC. Were there real justice, those fees would have come from the Trustee's pockets...

I sit corrected and appreciate your having done so. I've made a point of this fact many a time in other contexts, but was less than precise this AM. This is the injustice inflicted on taxpayers of relevant jurisdictions in which @#$% like this is done. The bureaucrats and educrats do the @#$%, but taxpayers pay for consequent legal fees and awards.
