Am I wrong to be upset about this question on my child's homework? [View all]

My 15-year old daughter brought home a worksheet for history class. They are studying maps.

This is one of the questions on this homework:

"You have 200km worth of fuel. You are leaving from the Syria/Turkey border. You want to bomb Mosul, Rajah, Sinjar and then return. Will you make it? Please explain your answer."

My initial sense--Why are you teaching my 9th grader about maps and distance with a scenario involving bombing three cities?

Isn't this perpetuating war? Hatred of the Middle East and the people in it? Desensitizing our kids to killing and bombing and destroying the Middle East?

This scenario didn't have to be used. The teacher could have used a number of scenarios and seems to be purposely interjecting war/bombing into the homework on purpose.

In this day and age of hi def cameras on everything you can buy, the stupid ****ing liar can't manage to show even a bit of FAKED evidence.

About 100 replies, roughly 3% are concerned with the complete lack of proof. Yet I will take a wild guess that the stupid **** has 5000 hi-res picks of her cat somewhere on DU.

112. Ok look...

We are all in agreement that this homework and the questions on the homework are outrageous.  No, we aren't, because you haven't provided even faked evidence that this happened. Even Dan Rather went to that trouble.

I'm the one who has to make the decision about what to do. And it could affect my kids.  You lying now affects your kids, you stupid ****.

I appreciate that some people don't believe me. That's fine, but if posting a pic is the only way to make people believe me, then I guess I'll just have to be seen as a liar for now (by some), because I'm not quite sure what to do.  If I find even ONE picture posted by you on DU, I'm burning a mole.

It's very easy to tell someone what to do in a situation like this, but it's not that easy. It's exceedingly easy, you stupid ****: post a picture, or you're LYING.

117. There is a map on the back side of the homework...

I believe those cities were identified, but I didn't look closely at the map. My daughter took the homework to school this morning.

Last night, I put taped white strips of paper over her answers and over her name--and I took pictures.

I noticed though, at the top of the page--the teacher's name is on the homework. This is a female teacher who authored this homework. However, my daughter's social-studies teacher is male. I asked my daughter about this at breakfast and she said that this female teacher is one of the other social studies teachers at her school.

So apparently, her male teacher used a homework sheet authored by this other female social studies teacher.

Hard to wrap my brain around the fact that a female teacher would do this. I did look at her FB page and she is definitely a Republican.

I brought my husband into this discussion, and he's now attempting to block her name from the pic I took. I don't know how to do that. He thinks it's fine if the pic is posted as long as the teacher isn't identified.

Liberals: when they're caught lying, they revert to sexism and politics. What a sorry sack of ridiculous shit CoffeeCat is.

     Time to go sleuthing.

20,000 posts and a nut case. Yeah, she's posted personal pics before, you can count on it. Just a matter of someone finding one and asking her why she could post that one but not this one. Just make sure it is a personal pic from a photobucket account or something similar and not some image from a website.

Upon further reading, I see she's now claiming that posting a pic could come back on her kid, so she's in a quandary as to what to do. Maybe she should stop lying; that would be a start.

What a bunch of bullshit. She could redact everything and post it, but then she'd have to take time out of her busy vibrator-hiding schedule to mock up a phony document.

59. I don't believe you.

Others have politely and gingerly suggested more or less the same thing ("please post an image"), but I'm going to be impolite and blunt.

This post sounds made up.

The red flags:

1. Why is fuel measured in kilometers?

2. Americans don't measure distance in kilometers anyway.

3. Syria and Turkey have a long border. Where is this hypothetical plane taking off?

4. Mosul is in Iraq. I consider myself relatively well informed for an American, but I couldn't locate Mosul any better than that. There is no way American 9th graders could tell you where Mosul is. In fact, I suspect most of them would guess that Mosul is the name of a breakfast food, high in fiber but not tasty, that people in "Europe" eat.

5. I have never heard of cities called Rajah and Sinjar. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that, assuming these cities even exist, only a small fraction of 1% of American teenagers have heard of them.

If I am wrong, I apologize. But this just sounds like bullshit.

ETA: The problem is akin to the traveling salesman problem, which is a famously difficult and deep math problem. If 9th graders are really being asked questions like this, I have to say that I am very, very impressed with the state of American math education.

This seems rather non-credible. This kind of homework problem would be along the lines of, "You have 200KM of fuel, are starting in Sacramento at the Capitol and are driving to Apple on Infinite Loop in Cupertino. Do you have enough fuel?" And supply the necessary maps, with distance scales. The "extra credit" problems would be, "Do you have enough fuel to take the tour at the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield?" And, "Should you tour a factory that lures children into eating sugary snacks?"

OTOH, what USAF plane carries just 200KM of fuel?

Ridiculous question if such were presented to 9th graders in Iraq or Syria. They all know that if they are sent somewhere to bomb a city they won't be returning.

So, if you were to leave from say, El Paso in a B52 to bomb those cities, and you were traveling at 500 km per hour, considering the rotation of the earth, how long would it take you to fly to Myrtle Beach for a family vacation and how much fuel would you use?

"KM" is Kilometers.  KG (or just K) is Kilograms.  Granted, jets usually measure in terms of the mass of fuel, but most people, especially teachers, would use L(itres) or the rare KL (Kiloliters)

More proof this is a bouncy.

Step 1: Let a=b.
Step 2: Then a^2 = ab,
Step 3: a^2 + a^2 = a^2 + ab,
Step 4: 2 a^2 = a^2 + ab,
Step 5: 2 a^2 - 2 ab = a^2 + ab - 2 ab,
Step 6: and 2 a^2 - 2 ab = a^2 - ab.
Step 7: This can be written as 2 (a^2 - a b) = 1 (a^2 - a b),
Step 8: and cancelling the (a^2 - ab) from both sides gives 1=2.

Thus 1=2

True. Range is typically specified in miles or KM, but fuel capacity in some unit of liquid measure. That said, 200KM is a little over 120 miles, far less than the kind of range I'd expect of a USAF (or USN) plane. So the whole exercise, IF REAL, is unrealistic. OTOH, the route one would take from Sacto, via Fairfield, to Cupertino is realistic, though I think the distance is on the order of 150 miles. So a person attempting it should refuel their car after touring the jelly Belly factory in Fairfield. Budweiser also has a plant in Fairfield ...

Bud has a plant across the street from Newark Airport.  When the wind blows towards the street it smells like cereal (a smell I remember from the Bud plant in Van Nuys and the Miller plant in Azusa).

If they are smart, they won't strike the beer or distillery plants.  That would REALLY piss people off!
