If I were greenbriar's child, I'd want to get away as soon as possible. 
I thought the ASVAB was just a test, like the SAT and the redneck SAT (the ACT). There are no commitments attached to it, other than if you intend to enlist. My brother took it in high school with no intention of joining the military... it was just another test. He did very well on the mathematics part.
Even 25 plus years ago this was the case,just another set of competancy tests.
I think you hit on it with your first statement though and think it is revealing that she has been in consultation with her father already.
She has seen what a poor excuse for a human her mom is and wants to make her life better.
