A U.S. Special Operations raid rescued "numerous" Iraqis who were held captive by ISIS, a senior defense official confirms to Fox News.

The official said the hostages were not Kurds. He would not comment on reports of U.S. deaths.

The official could not immediately say where the rescue took place. It's not clear which rescue forces were involved.

Update to the story:

One U.S. soldier was killed in an operation that freed more than 70 ISIS hostages in Iraq, military sources confirm to Fox News.

The hostages were freed from an ISIS prison in northern Iraq near Tikrit. "People were chained to walls," one well-placed military source said.

"A mass atrocity was averted," a senior U.S. defense source tells Fox News. U.S. rescue forces moved in when it was apparent that ISIS hostage takers were planning to kill the hostages.

One military source says most hostages were Iraqi security forces, many were from the Iraqi Army, and some were police. Some of those rescued were part of the "Sunni Awakening," the fight against Al Qaeda that saw Sunnis alongside U.S. forces almost a decade ago.

Fox News is told U.S. Special Operations forces killed 10 ISIS hostage takers during the overnight raid.

I feel awful for the dead Special Ops' mans family, and may God rest his soul.  Sounds like there must have been alot to this story than has yet come out; what was so important about this group of hostages held by the savages above the welfare and safety and ultimately the lives of the countless innocents crucified, beheaded and otherwise outraged and violated by the ISIS terrorists?  I'm glad the rest of the hostages and rescuers are safe, but again, what exactly prompted this particular raid?
